This is an issue even as an adult.  I'm a PhD student, and I have no idea what to do about boarding arrangements when I go to other institutions or travel for conferences.  I ended up sharing a bed with a friend of mine who's a girl when we traveled to a conference, and it felt simultaneously like "I don't care because she's my friend" and also like "no way would this have been suggested if the people around us saw me as a man."

It's tough...

It sounds like it worked out for the best. It could have easily gone the other way.
I can't even comprehend what it would be like if I came out back in highschool. They gave me enough crap for having long hair. I actually skipped a senior sleepover because I overheard their plans to cut my hair while I was sleeping.
