Maryland Birth Certificate Legislation Removes Roadblocks for Transgender People

March 25, 2015 by HRC staff

"This vital legislation will ensure transgender people are able to receive appropriate identification and documentation that reflects the way they live their lives," said HRC Senior Legislative Counsel Alison Gill.

"The changes will modernize Maryland law and standardize a necessary government function in a simple way that is consumer friendly, concise, and professional. We call on Governor Hogan to sign this important legislation into law as soon as it reaches his desk."

A real test for Hogan. He's a Republican governor in a moderate state. Not clear where he stands on social issues. He's made one or two stumbles early on, got called out, and corrected them, so I have high hopes. Let's see what he does.

Unfortunately, Larry Hogan has made it quite clear that he is no friend of trans* people.  I hope he signs the bill, but I won't hold my breath.

MD is almost as left as NJ (and we have a R governor too). I think he will sign it though. What is the pressure from the religious establishment in MD like anyway?

Intense. A lot of the African-American churches are very conservative, and Maryland is a traditionally Catholic state.

My gender problem isn't half as bad as society's.  Although mine is still pretty bad.

Well it could be an uphill climb then. Good luck.
