With a landmark vote Tuesday by the Shibuya Ward Assembly in Tokyo, the district became the first locale in Japan to recognize same-sex partnerships as the "equivalent of a marriage," guaranteeing the identical rights of married couples, including hospital visitations and apartment rentals.

In Japan, the constitution stipulates a marriage is between a man and a woman.
Therefore, same sex marriage is not recognized.
That said, Shibuya ward in Tokyo now recognizes them since last Tuesday even it is unconstitutional.
This is still going to take a while before the constitution changes.
This doesn't change much my situation and other transgenders but this is a big step forward.

That's awesome 
One thing that has always bothered me is Japan's super stringent rules about citizenship. If I were to marry a Japanese man, Japan would require that I renounce my Canadian citizenship and would prohibit him from obtaining Canadian citizenship, unless he renounced the Japanese one.

The United States has the same rule. Canada would have been perfectly happy to give me dual citizenship as my father was born there. I think it's a horrible rule.

Has that rule been recently enacted? As of 2014, the United States had no such rule and was fully accepting of dual citizenship, as is Canada currently. My aunt is a Canadian/U.S. dual citizen.

Perhaps my info is out of date. I last looked at it in the 70's. Or I could have been misinformed. It sucks if I was wrong. There were several times in my life when Canadian citizenship would have been useful. I grew up on the border and have a lot of family there.
