I had a Conversation with my superintendent last week as I started HRT this week. I told him about my being trans and the only thing he said was "Will that affect your work, because if not I don't see an issue." I was stuned again at this response, but quickly gathered myself and contunied the conversation. He called me to his office on Friday to tell me that HR does not see any discrimination policies that cover transgender people, and they could not discuss it any further at that time. Well I went into his office yesterday just to say "morning" and he told me to come in and shut the door. He then explained that HR is correcting their policies to include transgender in their nondiscrimination policy and trying to write up some sort of contract for laying out a planed time line so that they can stay in the know about what is happening and when. They are trying to figure out the bathroom issues and how they are going to handle It.
I am so proud of myself, as my coming out has caused another employer to adopt policies to protect us in the workforce. I am also proud of the city for handling this the right way.
