Tonight NBC nightly news will be hosting the first of a two-part special on transgender kids. The first night features Joe and Mimi Lemay and their five year old son Jacob.

"Jacob is your typical energetic five-year-old little boy who loves to run around, loves to play in the dirt, loves to get his hands into things," said Mimi.

"He is just like the funnest kid, and a great buddy to have around, he was also born in a girl's body." added Joe.

"Jacob is transgender." Mimi explained.

Last year, when he was four, they made a decision: to let him live as he has always identified — as a boy.

Some may think that's too young to make such a change, but many doctors who specialize in working with transgender children believe it's right for certain kids — those who show a rock-solid and enduring belief in their gender identity.

One Doctor Explains the Journey for Kids Who Are Transitioning

http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/transgender-kids/one-doctor-explains-journey-kids-who-are-transitioning-n345621

Dr. Michelle Forcier, associate professor of pediatrics at Brown University Alpert Medical School, explains how puberty blockers work for transgender kids.

===============

This one makes me a tad uncomfortable. The doctor plays up the extent to which the child is "insistent" and "persistent" as important to the diagnosis. This would favor assertive and outspoken kids. I think that's not a good thing. The right to transition should not have to do with how outspoken a kid it.

Dr. Forcier is my doctor, the one in the previous post of the thread, has been for years, going back to my teens, since she's quite the specialist on youth/teens, but still sees any ages. The way this was said was strange for her, perhaps edited a bit. I think she means this when she sees a potential kid, in which case you wouldn't have to be assertive.

She knew who I was within the first 10 words I spoke to her, since her first question to every child is, "Are you a boy, girl, or somewhere in-between?" When I first saw her, I could not have been more reclusive in my day to day life, and anything but outspoken to anyone but her/parents/therapists about this, which is kind of significant in that sense. I mean, if the child isn't being consistent on some level, even fluidity, it's a bit harder to give medical intervention like hormones in this case.

The persistent, insistent stuff isn't the last time you'll hear her say that though, she said it enough when I was filming with her this past Wednesday, the 22nd. It sounds odd without the context and knowing what a strong doctor she is, but I'd defend that as I do here, given I've heard it so often.

Dr. Forcier is also my doctor too. I was 23 when I went to see her, I wasn't even a little kid and I was staring at the ground trying to tell her, I'm a guy, not a female. She sat down and talked to me and had patience to let me say whatever it was that i needed too and answered any questions I had about T. Obviously she made sure, I was sure about T and I knew everything that was going to happen and what would happen if I stopped it.
