Social Security question

So I recently moved out of state from New York before changing my gender with social security. It's done on my ID so for casual purposes no one questions my gender.

However, I didn't think about background checks for a new job and I'm terrified that I'll get in trouble or be outed because of this. I'm pretty sure they're gonna see my gender when coming across my SS, right? So I want to get it changed but I'm curious if I can do it through mail or if I have to be there in person. Or maybe it's possible to get it changed in my new state despite it originally being issued somewhere else? Any help is much appreciated!

To be sure, I would call them. You need a letter from your doctor and the ID with the correct gender on it to change it. I did mine in person, but they do a lot by mail now days. Good luck and hugs Also if you like we could move this to the legal section where it might get a bigger audience familiar with this issue.

While I have the letter and ID, I doubt they'd take copies or want me to mail in my actual ID so this is pretty confusing haha. If you could move it to the legal section that would be great! Thank you.

They have to be originals. Anything you give social security they do return to you once they are finished with it. I take it you didn't know that which is why I'm letting you know that now, but when doing things through mail it can take time for them to be returned to you. Hugs

Social security is federal, not state. You can go in person to any social security office and have it done in minutes.


For what it is worth, social security no longer sends no match letters for gender.
