I got an hrt letter today:-)
Assuming my doc is cool with prescribing me hrt
I'll be startin soon
in a year I'll start my internship and bachelors program in computer science
And will also, hopefully, be full time.
Will I be hired for an internship even thought im trans?
will I get a job?
I don't har the answer and its scaring me cuz I wanna transition but I don't want to be homeless
my family doesn't have much money

It's amazing how scary the unknown is. So many things can happen that we have no control over. All we can do is take one day at time and tackle each issue as they come. If we were to let fear rule us we would never accomplish anything. No one would ever transition because we could get past that fear of not knowing. In he end we never know what is gong to happen tell it does. Whole your head high and be proud of the person you are. We all have those fears and it comes down to how we handle them. Congrats on the letter. I hope you have the strength and courage to face yours when your ready to. Good luck and hugs

From what I understand, the tech industry is very good with trans. I don't think you'll have much of an issue. Even for those that start transition, it's a good field to be in. I'm still stealth at my job (although insurance does pay for everything!), but when I'm fully out, I don't think there will be a problem. I do plan on moving to Portland or Seattle in a couple years, though.

I can definetly help you answer these questions but first I need to know what state you live in or if you even live in the united states at all.
I know for the united states certain states have laws protecting trans people against this.

Congrats, I wouldn't have guessed you are pre HRT from your profile pic.

If you are certain that you want to transition then I'm not sure I see the point in not going full time and doing your internship as who you really are. I'd imagine that in your industry people will be more interested in your ability than your gender, they certainly are in mine, (CGI, a similarly young-ish industry). And with you being young and good looking it will be less of an issue.

It is scary, I'd be more surprised if you weren't scared in some way, but it gets less so as the changes come, trust me. 🙂

No you dont have to tell them
But if she plans to go into this internship full time it might be something that the employer will see.
The only real way the employer wont notice this is if she changes her name and gender marker on her paperwork
if that occurs when she applys it would be no different than a CIS female applying for that internship.

hun, i think you'll be just fine. if you set out to accomplish what you desire, than you will succeed. dont let fear hold you back but instead, let it push you further into uncharted areas, and you know what, you may actually enjoy the new discovers.

There is one way though. Some ask on background check forms if you ever went by any other names. Lying is fraud and thus a felony.

Yep and most IT jobs do require background checks I was in the IT field and still sorta am so I understand
So if this occurs we go back to square one when I asked her what state she lives in

Even so a lot of big companies have policies that are anti discrimination.

Transition is definitely a leap into the great unknown. It is absolutely reasonable to be scared, the important thing is to not let that fear rule your life. Plan for the future but take each day at a time, live your life and become the real you and in the meantime research into trans friendly companies.

Firstrly Ravenna, congratulations on getting your HRT letter - this is a rather big step, not so much because of the chemicals, but because you're effectively giving yourself permission to move on.

Your questions are relevant, no doubt, and the answers are that your gender and transition status are pretty much irrelevant in this field.  Your capability will be the key evaluation criteria.  Truly, a decent employer will not be looking at your transness or any other secondary characteristic:  they'll be evaluating you on whether you would be an asset to the company - a hot programmer, analyst or solution architect.  These things are 100% in your hands to influence and control.

As you go forward, it helps hugely to have a strongly positive attitude.  Our trans journey always has bumps in the road, and sometimes unexpected detours.  But if you smile, take these in your stride, involve people in your transition so that they support you, then you will find things to be so much more rewarding.

One day at a time.

Where I work there are a lot of IS that are unique. I belong to Pride at work and the leader is from IS. The CEO at work is the head of diversity and the acting president is gay. We have 14,000 employees and a huge IS department. There is an intern in my office area that is trans so I know where I work we hire trans.

I'm definitely going to transition.
I'm going to take the leap and hopefully have the confidence and perseverance to prevail and be successful despite the many adversities that very possibility might be thrown at me
