Welcome to Susan's Place.

I'm a BSME with a PE. I was a member of AES in college and had initially wanted to go the automobile engineering route. However, during a co-op I found something that really was a right fit. Good luck in your career and transition.

If you truly are set on the automotive industry you should know that the pay is substantially less than most engineering jobs and you will experience a fair bit of stress. Start learning NURBS modeling ASAP and get good at it, decide which sub speciality you want to work on (note some might require a degree in physics (fluid dynamics) or aerodynamics, also I highly recommend you study joining technologies (MIT used to have an excellent online course)). Automotive engineering is mostly about hybrid material science, joining materials together and making sure they can take the cycle count required to stay together until they are out of warranty while making sure you use as little of the raw material as possible and avoid any expensive manufacturing procedures.
