Hi, like many of you, I'm undergoing hair removal treatments, but the time is concerning me.

They do laser treatments once a month, for 30 minutes, and then electrolysis every 2 weeks for only 15 minutes.
Four treatments of laser so far, but it seems like this will take about 50 years to get completed!  ;D

What experience do you girls have...is this quite normal, or...?

The laser is usually able to cover a lot of area in a short time so I guess that sounds OK. If you're doing it in tandem with electro I guess it'll work out but may depend on the variety of electro. I'm having multi-probe galvanic electro only (hair is too light for laser)... but I have that in three hour blocks. At one stage I was doing that every two weeks and have now clocked up to 100 hours of treatment (fortunately there's only about another twenty to go). Fifteen minutes doesn't sound like it would accomplish much but maybe with the laser it'll work for you.

Laser also needs a delay time between treatments, it should be about 6 weeks. This is because the hair growth cycle in humans is about 6-8 weeks so the delay is to let the next growth cycle to start. It isn't worthwhile to laser dead follicles.

Electro takes the follicle out straight away but has to be targeted to each individual one.

You may save time and money, depending on your hair and skin colour mix to get laser first and then clear the rest with electro.

If you are paying an electro tech to remove follicles that have been zapped it is a waste of effort and money.

I do full clears of the entire face via electrology. I use E3000 in Dallas, and they use lidocaine injections so it's not all that painful, except for the painkiller injections themselves. A session right now is in the 4-6 hour range, though I expect the next session to be closer to 6 than anything else, since I had to take a break for a few months after FFS.

Just 15 minutes of electrolysis doesn't sound like much at all. The average male face has thousands upon thousands of male beard follicles on it. A good electrologist can remove a single hair every 5-8 seconds, it seems, so 8-12 hairs per minute. That 15 minutes means just 180 hairs.

Also, anecdotally, my own reading on this topic, which is fairly extensive, seems to indicate that the average MtF face takes 100-200 total hours of electrolysis to clear. A few are fortunate enough to go through less, a very few are unfortunate enough to need more than 200 hours, but the great majority seem to be in that 100-200 hour range with most seeming to be in the 100-150 range. I don't have statistics to back that up, but it's the impression I've gotten from talking to lots of women who have completed their facial hair removal processes.

Laser is different and can clear the face in much less time because it can cover more, if it works. For those for whom laser works, it's a godsend indeed, but for lots of us, it just isn't an option.

I did 3 sessions of laser 6 weeks apart then started mixed electrolysis. I am 33 hours into electrolysis and I will need about 110 for my face. I do 1.5 hours each week. I get 11 hours at a time for 10 hour cost. Also, she froze my pricing (prices just went up $10/hr). Insurance pays 70% of the laser and electrolysis cost.

Ears hurt the most then upper lip then the center of the chin.

I need to think about genital clearing which takes 3 sweeps. I may have that done where I can have numbing injections :( .

Good luck.

I did laser for a year and have been doing electrolysis 2 hours a week for a year and a half. I probably have at least a year left to go.

All in all, hair removal will end up costing far more than SRS.
Have you read my short story The Eve of Triumph?

Thinking of that hurts more than the hair removal ;D

In my case I started with electrolysis. I wish I started with laser.

The electrolysis has cleared where she worked but the hair grew back fast.

The laser has cleared it out and my face is mostly smooth now. I have a few thick hairs growing back but they are very sparse.

I would say two more sessions at least and I'm done then I go back to the electrologist to finish up. However I may not even need to do that. What I thought was a curse is actually a blessing. I have very dark hairs so they are targeted by the laser very well. Due to my type IV skin they have to use the Nd:YAG laser. They use an epicare duo by light age.

So all told a little less than a year I'm hoping. I was told with electrolysis it could be as much as 2 years. Apart from the time it was costing quite a lot of money and I also had issues with passability. Not anymore. I also had to endure the torture every week but not anymore.

I like my electrologist though. She is a funny and smart trans lady who always has a good story to tell.

Doing laser then electrolysis soon after seems like a waste to me. However it may be worthwhile to people who have light hairs. In my case my hairs are all dark except for the four or five grays which I had plucked anyway.

i started off with electrolysis and for me it is working very well for my sparse facial hair.  i guess it would largely depend on how thick your facial hair actually is and how big of an area it covers. i'm right around 11 hours at 1 hour per week, and she is going back daily to catch regrowth as she adds to the area, and ive had about 3/4 of it cleared and maintained with very few hairs seeming to come back.  just the chin area, and lip area left. @.@  but if you have a ton of facial hair or if you are intending on going full time in a timely fashion, if might be more prudent to get laser instead,

For me I had only one choice - electrolysis. At my age, not many dark hairs left on my face. I would say that my growth is moderate. I have had seven 1 hr sessions and will have 2 more this week. We started in the centre and are working out. Still lots of work left on upper lip and chin. Even with creams, I can only handle 1hr at a time. Electrolysis is a long process. I have to keep reminding myself to keep the end goal in mind!

Thanks girls, for all your feedback.
It really depends on your age and hair colour then...

So, if you need 150 hours, at 15 minutes a week, that takes 43 years to complete!!!
No way!
I was joking when I said 50, lol.
Who is seriously going to wait even 3 years for completion?

Well, I am on my 4th laser session too, and they said you need around 12 for complete removal, at the clinic.
I had electrolysis years ago, and every single hair grew back, so not as good experiences as you girls.

The only thing to do is do the laser and ask for more electro, don't you think?
Yes, it's expensive, but a girl can't have hairs on her face, you know...

Hugs everyone.
