Hello,
I am FTM and have been on T for 17 months, had top surgery and a hysterectomy/oophorectomy.

I have changed my gender with SSA, state department (passport), and DMV, but to change it on my birth certificate requires an Order for Gender Change from the court. I know the state of Wi requires a "surgery" but I am not clear on what qualifies. Does my hysterectomy in combination with my top surgery qualify as "enough" to get a court order? Has anyone (MTF or FTM) been through this in Wi and could give me some guidance on resources to get me started in the right direction?

Thank you!

Dex, my limited research for ftm is that its depends on the court what surgery(s) is accepted for them to change your birth certificate.  I have heard of some accepting hysterectomy/oophorectomy and top surgery.  I think all you can do is follow the procedure and hope for the best.

Thank you for the info!

I have just been confused on what qualifies as an appropriate surgery to bring to court. I suppose that is somewhat dependent on the judge hearing the case as well since it doesn't seem to be spelled out anywhere. I just don't want to get there and find out it's not enough.

Dex, where is the court Madison and Milwaukee are the most liberal in the state.  How the surgeon words the letter is important too, should give the impression that you should be seen as a guy now.

I don't live in either of those areas but definitely not in the most conservative areas either. Can you petition any state court for the gender change order or does it have to be the county where you reside?

It may be easier to consult with a lawyer but I also don't know where to start searching for a lawyer that would have experience in this either.

FWIW, my friend had the birth cert changed with NO surgery in Wisconsin. Just a few days ago.

Interesting LordKAT, do you know how the letter was words and what judge made the change?  I hadn't heard of anyone getting a change of birth certificate that way in WI.

That is interesting. I was also born in Wisconsin but no longer live there so I'm curious about what it takes to get this done.

It kind of got snuck through, the clerk said afterward it shouldn't have happened.

Can you do it in any county? I'm not residing in Wisconsin, so getting everything changed will be a pain as I want a new BC with the proper stuff. I don't feel comfortable with the crossed out name and gender.
