Questions for anyone who's had bottom surgery?

I'm a 17 year old FTM and I'm looking at bottom surgery. I've heard different thoughts from different people. After you've had the surgery, did you lose a lot of feeling and did it ever return? If it did, how long did you wait for it to return? Do you feel anything during sex or masturbation? Other than not being able to produce sperm, does it function like a regular anatomic male penis overall? As much as how badly I want the surgery, the rumors about losing a lot of feeling puts me on the fence whether I should get it or not.

There are lots of different surgeries.  The lose of feeling was more common "back in the day".

Here is a good place to start to begin to learn about surgeries.  I don't think we are allowed to post any links here, but check out Hudson's FTM resource guide and then clink under FTM genital reconstruction surgeries.  That will get you well on your way to learning about all the different options.

I have had the first stage of phalloplasty with the London team and they have done a nerve hookup. I am currently waiting for the nerves to grow back in so sensation returns. I have full sensation in the ball that they have inserted so far and have herd that sensations gets much better after stage 2. After stage 2, I will be able to pee standing up and after the final stage, I will be able to inflate and deflate my penis to achieve an erection. I don't regret having the surgery in the slightest. I really didn't realise how having something there actually would give me a psychological confidence boost. It is a very hard experience but it makes you appreciate what you get in the end and has 100% helped any dysphoria I had. This is the first time I have been comfortable being naked with a girl and that has been priceless

I'd choose Metoidioplasty personally, because it's more natural and I don't care about penetration for any reason.

CJ, great to hear you have such good results with the first stage, keep us updated as time goes on.  I would like to have the surgery and in the end have a penis that get hard/soft at your command.  Also great to hear that your dysphoria has improved so much at this stage.  It must great to be able to be naked with girl and feel good about yourself.

Your question really can't be given one straight answer. Dr.s vary in their skill at working with nerves, defining a glans from the shaft of the penis as well as some other things.

Nerves have a better chance of regenerating and healing in younger people than in older people. (teens as opposed to thirties). Since i had mine so long ago, I've looked at sites to see what the results from phalloplasties are these days. Some are very good, some look like mine. The first procedures were dropping a flap from the abdomen. After that came the radial forarm flap and now there are flaps taken from the thigh and one Dr. takes the flap from the side of the body and includes some of the muscle.

Most Dr. try to incorporate or at least leave on the clitoris.  That way, if there is no erotic feeling in the new phallus, the patient can still climax. Its hard to predict whether a nerve hookup will work. Even if the procedure is the same. I don't think you will find a Dr. who will gaurantee that you will have erotic feeling in the penis. There are implants that allow for an erection, but it won't be  the same as a cis man's erection.

One thing I can say, mine is just a hollow skin tube with no feeling or definition, but I have never once regretted having it done. It comes down to how important it is for you to have something between your legs that is not a prosthesis. For some its important, for others its not. One doesn't make you any less a man than the other.

Cheers mate! I will definitely keep you updated, just waiting for my 2nd stage date to come through now, very excited! My dysphoria has improved so much more than I was expecting if I'm honest, been very lucky. Obviously it is not the same for everyone but I can only go on what it has been like for me

I have completed all my surgery (including nerve hook up), having had my first stage at 21.
I had sensation in, roughly the bottom 3rd of my penis, at first. It improved over the next year or two (although those improvements were stunted each time another surgery happened). But now I have really good sensation all over my penis, and the balls have had great sensation from day 1.
I do feel things during sex and masturbation, its great. And Im now comfortable with my body, as CJ said, being comfortable being naked with a girl is priceless.
Also just being able to pee at a urinal is priceless too.
As for it functioning like an anatomic penis, it wont ever get erect without the aid of a device. But there are ways around that.
