So just wondering, any hams on here? I need some advice, I'm waiting to get my technician license and am trying a way a friend suggested (the same way he got his) which is go online and take practice test, after practice test after practice test until I am constantly getting passing scores. Well thing about that is I'm still sitting around 50-61% and occasionally scoring 39%. Any study guides yall can suggest?

Also Beofang or Yeasu? I know I spelled those wrong but spelling ain't my strong suit lol

Ha!!!  Mine too.  Now that my dad retired, that's what he does all day. He even goes on globetrotting adventures just to play with his radio.

I personally never understood the appeal of it.  I mean, to me, the internet made those quite obsolete.

Hahaha....BTW they still make tube amps....the Peevy 5150, Crate Blue Voodoo and several Paul Reed amps are proof.

and I want mine more for when the poop hits the air circulation device. If you think about it if the world goes dark because the grid fails, cell phone towers will be down, land lines will be jammed up from everyone in the US trying to call 911...all the while I'll be talking to my friends in different cities while I get the heck out of Dodge.....in my lifted Dodge that can turn a smart car into a parking space lol (sorry I couldn't resist)

Try the books from ARRL, written by Gorden West.
They go over each question and tells you why the right is, the right answer.

I got my No code tech ticket in 1999.

Ops forgot about the Gorden West books. Yea they are great way to study. When I used to go to the Dayton Hamfest there was always a lot people around his booth.

Thanks for this post it has reminded me of one the positive reasons for living on Ohio. That was always a fun trip as me and my dad would spend the weekend at the Hamfest then before heading back home we would tour the National Air Force Museum. Some times we would also visit the Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta.

I would love to go to Dayton some time.
Unfortunately, I've only gone to one hamvention.  But boy was it a blast.

I am one and I know a few trans people who are. I won't put my call here as it has my home address but I've been a ham for almost 20 years, since I was in high school. I hold licenses in 3 countries.

I've had good times at Dayton. Unfortunately after the poop volcano I decided to stay away. Also they banned CCW so no guns, no money. My club had a hospitality suite and it was awesome. That was scrapped after some infighting. I went to ARRL centennial in Hartford CT this year and had a blast.

I'm not a Ham, but I do have a commercial license. I did do repairs on Ham equipment alongside of the commercial units. Amateur radio along with the model trains are becoming dying arts as the Boomer generation fades away. I hear complaints from both groups on that as well as the astronomical community of the less younger generations not getting interested in these fields or hobbies.

Ham radio has been dying for years. By that I mean it's not dying. There are more licensees than ever now, in fact. Ham radio today is something a lot of people pick up in their 40s. I was unusual in that I picked it up as a teenager.

Contesting/radio sport and DXing are very appealing to many younger folks. It does take a special breed to become a ham though.

i purchased a Uv-5R semi-recently, for when the excrement impacts the air-oscillation device, but i've held off getting my licence/ studying/ playing with it, because of the annual house move.

i also upgraded it with the extended battery so that it will fit better into a single-mag ammo pouch im using as a radio pouch on my molle vest, and a better antenna. im hoping to be able to get both a secret-service style earbud coil, and a peltor comtac -style headset to both cut down on bullet noise and be able to hook into the baofeng for squad comms, but we'll see how lucky im allowed to be.

I have the 5-R with the extended battery, but still have the OEM antenna. I also did some extensive searching and managed to find a Mil-Spec throat Mic with vest mounted ptt but I don't mount it. My entire setup is rigged to quickly jeddison my PC but still have my coms, side arm, 4 mags for the sidearm and two M4 magazines still on my belt along with a PMK in the event that I have to get away faster on foot.
