So its april, 22 and I am reading the new comics of the week its been a good few months not too long ago Sera secondary character in marvels new Angela Asgard's Assassin title was reveled to be Transgender. one of the few born male in her society with the aid of the title character she excaped her life of prayer and solitude to become a strong tough warrior sorceress and adventurer as well as sometime lover to Angela, it was a great issue and she has been a fantastic character sense, far more relatable and human character who often acts as story teller explaining angela and her past.

so that was about a month ago then tonight I am reading through new marvel comics and its x-men as part of a long running storyline the original x-men, cyclops, jean gray, beast, angel, and ice man have been dragged from the past into a future very different than they expect, after many trials and battles they finally get a moment to rest and after ice man makes another joke about there teacher Magick's hotness Jean drags him aside and asks him why he dose that and he feigns ignorance over and over again until she just outright says "Bobby your gay" what follows is both funny and touching where at first he tries to deny it with arguments like the future him dates women and eventually admits to himself and his team mate that she is right.

So go Marvel its not exactly ground breaking but having a younger character dealing with there sexuality is a good thing, as most of there better known LGBT characters are adults who are very used to who they are and may have just been hiding it from friends before hand.

Sworn to Protect a world that hates and fears them.

P.S. As if the whole mutant thing wasen't already an analogy for being LGBT+ :-)

Well I'm not giving up. Not for that part of me that hates myself. That part wants me to wither and die. not for you. Never for you.  --Loki: Agent of Asgard

In the 1980s the analogy was much more along the lines of racial segregation and hatred, then it changed in the '90s to just "being different".

But Bobby can't be gay, he totally had a thing for Rogue and Kitty Pryde in those movies! Maybe he's bi? ;)

Ya you can watch an evolution over time with the x men representing the oppressed people of there day, the racial issues of the 80's, the sexuality in the 90's and early 2000's, and all throughout the x-men more than any other super group has introduced strong female characters and today the main x-men title's team is all women with storm in command and a now vampire Jubilee (long story) as the teams bruiser.

on the subject of bobby

He says "I cant be gay the future me dated women"
jean "not well"
Bobby "but he dated professor pryde."
Jean "and now she is not even living on planet earth",
Bobby "is angel gay?"
Jean "no"
Bobby "Good he is too pretty anyways"
Jean "I know is annoying"

along the same lines because gay people never date women in an effort to hide themselves. they even speak briefly about how much harder things must have been back then (in essence during the 80's) for the older bobby compared to how much more accepting things are now.

it is a bit of an odd left field plot twist but it makes a certain level of sense, bobby himself has sabotaged most of his relationships over the years usually just when they start to get really serious.

all together all new x-men #40 was great.

then again over the last decade or so they have introduced so many characters, its sorta sad to not see them use already existing ones but heck if we get crazy lucky this could make it into the next movie.

hmm let me see how many LGBT superhero's (ones that it is not just that one time) I can name off the top of my head just marvel.

Mystique (was originally supposed to be night crawlers father with destiny as the mother)
Destiny
Northstar
Iceman
Karoline Dean
Xavin
Wiccan
Hulkling
Loki
Noh val
Miss America (who is from some sorta magical lesbian utopia world or something)
Ultimates universe colossus
Prodigy
Hercules and James Howlett from that alternate universe (ohh yes hercules and wolverine as a same sex tragic greek couple decending into hades to rescue each other from darkness)
Ultimates Jessica Drew is a gender flipped clone of peter parker who remembers being pete untill he was 16 then woke up a woman but they wasted that chance to explore gender identity.

ok that is all I can remember off the top of my head now all I am doing is yelling at me about what a stupid waste ultimate jessica drew became. Comics are perhaps the one medium where authors could dedicate a few panels every issue or two to a character dealing with gender identity and make it actually work without it being made into the characters sole reason to exist.

Northstar is quite interesting because I'm pretty sure creator John Byrne outed him as gay when the Alpha Flight series first started mid 1980s, and that was way before it was trendy to have gay characters. Not that he did much with the concept at the time. Not sure how the character has evolved since those days. I became fairly disenchanted with Marvel in the 1990s and only read a few of their titles nowadays (including the aforementioned all female X-Men).

They didn't out him at first, though they always intended it so happen but the comics code made it a no no. So they would regularly drop Clear hints like his sister Taking about how he if rushing home because his "roommate" is making dinner or a teammate telling a woman hitting on him that she is wasting her time. They often used skiing as an excuse, he just really loved skiing. The idea being he was out to his sister and close friends but not to the reader. :-)

ok Gotta get to bed but I just finished the latest angela and I must say I love marvel comics in summary.

--A Norse Goddess raised by mercenary Angels sets out on a quest to Hel, To rescue the transgender woman she loves from the torchered death she had condemned her to.--

DC have recently announced that Poison Ivy are in an open relationship, and I'm unsure as to whether this is a genuine attempt at progressing their character development and increase the represntation of LQBTQI+ people, or if it's just to appease the shippers, or to pander to LQBTQI+ people and allies for extra kudos and businesses :-/

I feel it's mostly a confirmation, even if they never actually have sex, they have long been depicted as loving each other to a degree few other comics couples can claim. More so perhaps because they never show the sexual side of it, they instead show there love affection and concern for each other. The real test is if dc keeps the focus of there relationship on there friendship and love for the other or if they turn it into something focused on the physical side of things.
