For a 4-year-old boy who enjoyed tottering around the house in his mother's high heels the word "transgender" was not part of Soto Petropoulos' childhood.

These days, Petropoulos, 47, can be found warmly greeting customers at Transformations, his family's Arlington Heights clothing and accessories shop that caters to the transgender community. More than four decades after he first donned women's clothing, he is cautiously optimistic that celebrity Bruce Jenner's recent transition to Caitlyn will help others end years of living in the shadows.
