I don't know what other board this would go to, but I thought this one is the most fitting.

Anyway, two weeks ago I went out with my mother to eat dinner because we didn't have anything at home. When we got back, the front door was open and I thought I just forgot to lock it. When I approached it, the door frame was completely broken, the back door was wide open, and my Xbox One, Xbox 360 controllers, and laptop were missing. We called the police and they said they wouldn't do anything because the crime was "too inexpensive" and "since the culprit was probably a juvenile, they won't have the fingerprints on record" so the police just ended up looking around and then left. My mom had nothing ensured, so I had spent the next two weeks trying to replace my old stuff and blew off all the pocket money I had to replace the Xbox 360 controllers and my laptop. Now I'm completely broke and I need advice on what to do next.
Seventeen and strung out on confusion,
Seventeen and coming clean for the first time,
no mom and dad will never understand,
what's happening to me.

Princess, I'm so sorry this happened to you. It's hard not to feel violated on a very personal level when someone enters your own space and takes things you care about.

But I'm not sure what advice you're seeking here -- if your problem is that now you have no money and can't afford necessities like medical treatment, then I hope you can learn something from this: budgets are important. A laptop is pretty much a necessity these days, and I can't fault you for needing to replace that right away, but an Xbox and controllers -- not so much. Perhaps it would have been better to hold off on those and save the money to replace them gradually, out of your pocket money.

The best advice I can give you would be to learn something about setting a budget and sticking to it -- there are a ton of online resources about this, and they're easy to find.

If you're short of cash to the point where you can't afford necessities like food -- I hate to say this, but return or sell the Xbox.

Given how emotionally wrenching all of this can be, it would probably be good to talk it over with your therapist, if you have one. Take care of yourself.

You might want to check out the local pawn shops and see if you can find your stuff but other than that, what Tysillo said is pretty much correct. I had my car taken just before I was ready for SRS. I was lucky and it was recovered 2 days latter. It would have put a big dent in my surgical money had I not recovered my old car.

I'm sorry this happened to you. The only good thing was that you weren't in the house when it happened. As Tysilio said, you must have felt very violated.

While I understand that the police are over run with crime these days, not having them offer help because the items were not as expensive must feel like they are turning their backs on you. After all, had you been home, the outcome could very easily ended in injury or death.

If you haven't already, see if you can get insurance on any of the items that were stolen. That won't help you for this robbery, but if you have your items insured, something that many companies offer, at least you wouldn't have to go broke trying to replace them.

If you don't know how they got in the house, see if you can find out, because houses that are easy targets may get around by word of mouth from the people that robbed your place to others looking for an easy mark.

You don't have to spend a fortune in home security, and if you can't afford a real system, they do make outdoor cameras that are very realistic looking but are basically just plastic with a blinking light running on a nine volt battery. No one wants to be caught, and that is a cheap deterent to being robbed again.

Its too bad that the cops wouldn't put the fingerprints into the system. Even if they are not already there and won't help you, they will then be on the system and the next place they rob, they will get caught.

Sorry that happened to you, I know the feeling of getting robbed and it sucks, you do feel violated

The police were not much help at first but my roommate and I got our revenge though

We found out who had done it so we drove past their place a few times giving them hard stares and talkin' smack then we went home and waited a few minutes

Sure enough a whole car load pulled up in front so my roommate called the police

The gangster guys came in and started fighting with us but we held them off fairly well and just about the time they were leaving a patrol car showed up to greet them and so they went for a ride downtown on home invasion charges and such

We never got our stuff back, but it would all be outdated crap now anyway

That's terrible and i know the feeling. My roommate and i were robbed years ago and the police only made an effort because it was armed robbery since my roommate was assaulted with a gun.

I can't imagine why they thought it was "too inexpensive" to bother with. Xbones aren't exactly cheap on themselves, nevermind the 360 and laptop. They also could have stored the fingerprints. Who knows? Maybe they were caught on something else. Ugh.

Honestly, search pawnshops and if you still have the case maybe it'll have a serial number on it to prove it's yours.

Sorry this happened to you, I know the feeling of being burglarized, twice to my cars(not robbed). You may want to talk to the police commander about this and let him know what happened, the other two cops may have just brushed it aside. It doesn't sound like proper police procedure in my experience, as a former USMC MP circa 1986-1991 and with a A.S. in Law Enforcement. What your describing is more like burglary, then robbery, in robbery you have to be physically present and have the items taken from you by intimidation or force. Burglary or/breaking and entering is when your not present and they break into your place, which is what happened.

I'd contact the watch commander, and see what he says about these two other cops who brushed it aside. Hell, if the watch commander brushed it aside, I'd even report it to the chief of police and mayor, with a written letter, saying what a <beep-beep>police dept.(ie. of course not cursing the police dept, may have to do a second letter, to clean up your frustration from the first letter, and send the second letter), NOT CURSING THEM, but do write a stern formal letter that they would not even do a police report, A CRIME DID OCCUR in your property, so you want it properly documented, and spread the word that your local pd, does not really do their job properly, reputation goes along way to correcting stuff in the long run, even if its minor stuff, word does get around, by word of mouth, sooner than later.

The pawnshop is my second lead, and third lead, is that the perps sold it hot to somebody else, or fourth,  their using it for themselves.

You may want to invest in "Force Protection or FP" as what we would call it in the military, or physical security. Wrought iron door screens and iron window bars, since the perps may hit your place again, since they know the lay of your pad, and maybe your schedule, or at the very least, a home security alarm system, or at the very least, home security stickers pasted in your windows or yard banner (ie.as a bluff), where the perps can see it. I always vary my routes, to/from work/home, have two dogs, wrought iron screen doors, good lighting at night and window iron bars. Then again, I live between Compton and Watts, and have lived in the greater metro Los Angeles area for over 20 years, so I know what I talk about.

Stay safe and be prepared.

P.S. You'd be surprised how therapeutic writing a letter is, to get out your frustration and worries, in times of crisis, even if you don't send it to anyone, and only you know, and then burn it, it works.
