"After warning his viewers to keep in mind "how impressionable and fickle" teenagers can be, Fox News anchor Bret Baier reported on what he called "the shocking new policy" in Oregon, where Medicaid has been covering medical treatments for transgender boys and girls as young 15 for nearly a year."

How am I not surprised?
I'm starting to suspect that somebody is paying them to be as bigoted as possible when it comes to cases like this.
That, or they're just stupid.
There is a better tomorrow.

Do you ever hear of Fox hiring pro-LGBT talking heads?  You know that's not what their target demographic wants to hear.

Fox news ought to be thought of as the onion is or those trashy so called magazines that you see at supermarket checkout stands.

Actually, I can sort of see their point.

As a parent, the notion that my kid will receive life altering medical care without my knowing about it makes me uncomfortable.

Yes, there is a lot wrong with this story, and yes, bringing in Paul McHugh to talk about treating trans kids is like bringing in Typhoid Mary to talk about safe food handling.

But if I lived in Oregon, I'd want to know more about this.
Have you read my short story The Eve of Triumph?

Wanting to know more about it is fine. Spreading outright lies is a whole other ball game.

There's also a print version of this:

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/07/09/oregon-allowing-15-year-olds-to-get-state-subsidized-sex-change-operations/

This is not as draconian a policy as Fox would like its ill-informed viewers to believe. First, the 15 year old age of consent in Oregon goes back to at least 2006, during the Bush presidency. This is getting attention now because of the Obamacare angle.

Also, under this law medical providers may give parents notification of their kid's desire for any treatment (this can't be done if the patient is 18). If there were true autonomy (as there is for an 18 year old) that would be illegal under Federal law.

And, there is the usually required mental health diagnosis. Under that same law, a minor of 14 years old may consent to mental health treatment, but the parents must be involved before the treatment is concluded. If they oppose, they are not financially obligated (also by law).

No legitimate surgeon will perform this surgery on a minor without RLE and without parental involvement unless he or she wants a malpractice suit. Also under that same law a surgeon is not immune from liability unless at least one parent has given consent. So, the kid can get treated, but if neither parent gives consent then the surgeon can be sued.

The law was originally made to allow teens who were being neglected or abused to get medical care without parental consent. Unlike with GRS, if an abused or neglected kid gets treatment to take care of an injury or illness the parents are not likely to object, as this would open them up to scrutiny and possible legal prosecution (and the surgeon has little to fear regarding his or her liability). Obamacare covers medical treatment (and GRS is medical treatment). But are there even any GRS surgeons in Oregon? I don't think surgeons in other states are obligated, or even authorized, to accept Oregon's Medicaid.

First of all, Fox news did not just say that but about it being a mental disorder. They were quoting a psychological paper written by someone else. And it wasnt even Bret Bair who qouted it. The story was about parental notice.

Yes, the story was about parental notice. But they cherry-picked the facts to make it sound like 15 year olds in Oregon are going to have GRS and there's not a thing that parents can do or say about that. That's false.

The paper in question is a meta analysis of other studies, and the Fox article misquoted it to give the impression that the efficacy of GRS was doubtful, even harmful, quoting Paul McHugh who stated that it amounts to child abuse. The 2010 Murad paper was about the combined application of HRT/GRS, and the conclusion (excerpted here) was:

" . . . sex reassignment that includes hormonal interventions in individuals with GID likely improves gender dysphoria, psychological functioning and comorbidities, sexual function and overall quality of life."

A bit of information not included in the story, and wholly in opposition to the tone and content of the Fox story.

Oregon did, indeed, alter the law. The story is true.

No, it's not.

http://m.snopes.com/oregon-teen-sex-change-law/

Look, anyone can look up the Oregon law for themselves (like I did) and the Murad article (like I did) and see this story is, at best, misinformation. Just more Fox News dog whistle scare tactics to make low-information viewers scared about Obamacare and make them think transgender people are a desperately wicked threat to America.

Okay..
I'm not gonna argue with a Fox-hater. But please re-read the article you posted a  linked to.

I cannot believe you're being so obtuse about this and so eager to believe this misinformation. What do you think I have missed?

Was it the part about the law being changed? [it wasn't]

Was it the part about kids being able to get GRS without parental consent? [they can't]

Was it the part about Oregon's policy amounting to child abuse? [it doesn't]

Was it the part about the "science being unsettled"? [they totally ignored the text of the study, so, WTF?]

This is not rocket science. A few clicks of the mouse, read the original documents for yourself and that's it! Problem solved!
