Hi, I was just wondering what OHIP offers for transsexuals in the province of Ontario. I am very early in the stages of transition and HRT is still aways away for me. However I am 22 years old, and I have came to the sad realization that I do indeed need to transition. Will they help me pay for the cost of hormones? and testosterone blocker? I know stuff like electrolysis etc will not be covered of course. I know at one time SRS was covered here in the province of Ontario, but that was many years ago. I am so afraid of the costs of transition. However I need to step forward now while I am still young and have a chance of being passable one day.

Consider it a HAPPY realization if you are not married or in a relationship.  Truly.  Read my posts.  Anyway, SRS is indeed covered by OHIP currently, but sadly may not be after next fall's election if the conservatives get in.  I'll write more later - I'm pressed for time - but definitely get thyself referred to CAMH without delay for assessment.  If you get accepted into their program, SRS will be covered.  If not, not.  AFAIK, HRT is not covered.

Not really too much to say other than what I've already posted.  As far as I know, only SRS is covered at present, none of the associated stuff (HRT, electrolysis, trach shave, FFS, etc.).  Although I'm aware of a human rights case that MAY have an effect (if won) on what else is covered, and MAY also open up other assessment centres besides CAMH.  CAMH has a bad rep, but from what I understand, it is changing and becoming more open.  I'm currently waiting to hear when my assessment will be - I sent my package in on Sept. 3.  You absolutely MUST be referred by a physician, then they'll send you an intake questionnaire, which you fill out and mail back.  It took me 4 weeks to get the questionnaire after I asked for the referral.  It also doesn't hurt your case if you find a gender therapist to work with while you wait.  You should absolutely wait for the assessment before doing anything permanent like HRT, unless you decide to go it alone (i.e. pay for everything yourself, which is, of course, an option).  I have a wife (31 years) and 3 kids (adults, living at home), so I'm taking the conservative approach, and waiting for the assessment, although I have come out to my wife and am starting to come out to the kids (I told my older son yesterday).  Also, seek out support groups in you area, and see if you can find and meet any trans people in your area also - I've found that to be very helpful in my case.  I'm in the GTA.

I was referred to CAMH in May, and still have not heard from them. I figure I will start saving up money, and see if I get into CAMH. If you go to CAMH they want you to live as your preferred gender for atleast a year before they will prescribe hormones.
