So I have to look for a new place to live because I plan on transferring to a school outside of my home state. The community college that I plan on going to is in pretty liberal area, and although they don't have student housing on campus they have a page on their site with listings of students and home owners in the area looking for roommates - but you would think people would be open minded.

Despite this, half of the listings are for women only and a good portion of those are the less expensive listings. I'm not depending on them, I guess I can always rent with an older couple looking for a new family member to share everything with. Or I could always pay twice what I would have live on my own (which will offset my transition which is always fun).

I can't stand it. It feels so unwelcoming to see that listed as a requirement of a tenant, right up there with "no smoking" and "no pets." Odds are I will just do this on my own, as usual. Maybe I'll even get a chance to watch as other people get to interact with people their own age instead of living with a middle aged land lord who will gouge the bejesus out me.
Trying to take it one day at a time :)

Depending on what state you're moving to, discriminating based on gender may be illegal... but even so, tell 'em you're female.  How would you react if they have a cow when you meet them?  If you can calmly describe somebody's actions as discriminatory to their face, you'll do fine.  If you can angrily threaten legal action, you might do fine.

Some people are just going to be ugly, and you don't want to live there anyway.

There are no real limitations on shared housing when it comes to gender, apparently. Even if there were I wouldn't take on the people who are so set in their ways. I'm just so tired of the constant rejection.

How about making an ad of your own in the "seeking housing" section and politely say that you are transgender in text of the ad...

It's pretty common, I'd try not to get too worked up over it. A lot of the ads that are looking for women-only are either guys looking for eye-candy/someone to cook and clean/potential sex partner, or women that wouldn't feel comfortable rooming with men. And really, who can blame them? People have their preferences on who they want to live with. I'd say with the latter, you might try talking to them anyway. If they're trans-friendly at all, and if you seem non-threatening, they might let you stay. And if it's a guy advertising like that then just steer clear anyway unless you're looking for an easy lay with a creep.

Good luck with your search!

Yeah, this is not a trans thing. In a housing shortage, we are *all* affected. Property managers get the benefit of a choice of tenants.

Come to Perth. Our mining boom just crashed and the place is like a ghost town. When I moved recently, all I had to do was say 'I'll take it'.
