I am REALLY happy to report that what others have said here has also been my experience. I about 3½ months post-op. I had one nipple that looked very good / normal. The other one, I was trying to come to terms with the fact that I had lost it. I even asked my surgeon about it at my last visit and he basically said it looked fine, that men don't have big nipples anyway but no - it would not change from what it was. The missing nipple just looked like a sunk in area in the center of the areola on that side. Just this last week it HAS started popping out a bit!!! It is certainly not as defined as the right one, but it is not sunk in and looking like something is missing - like it was until last week - either. Woo Hoo!!
I am thrilled - so don't get too down yet! I know exactly what you were feeling as I had been there (silently) for many weeks! The surgeon said (I think it was the day of the nipple reveal) that it looked like I was going to loose most of that nipple - he could tell because the scab was much thicker. He never really said anything else about it until I asked on the last visit and he said men don't have much nipples anyway ! LOL So I had just been trying to accept it. I kept telling myself not many people would see me with my shirt off anyway and if they did, maybe they wouldn't notice a missing nipple over the two long scars anyway. So, I am a happy camper this week.
In the end - I still would have had no regrets from having the surgery either way. I am VERY happy with the way my areola's turned out! I had seen others (in person and in pics) where their areola's looked like they had been sewn or stapled on - noticeably sitting above the skin - I was very happy when mine did NOT look that way. From the very first reveal I had a big ->-bleeped-<- eating grin on my face every time I look at the new me
