Hello all I am new and this is my first post ever on susan's . I hope this topic is in the right place. My name is Brycen and I have been on testosterone for a little over a year (I don't really keep track). Lately I have been having really bad issues with depression. I go from being content, or even happy, for one minute to depressed and distraught the next. I have been diagnosed with depression before testosterone so I have always had it but currently it's been really bad. I called my medical doctor about it and we set up a plan where I visit my psychiatrist and see what she says and then take it from there. While pondering my issues with depression I started thinking about "maleness." This will be quite hard to explain but I have been thinking that I am not dealing with myself as a male which is probably why I am having so many issues with my depression. I feel as if as a male, or since I've been taking testosterone, I have built up some aggression that has no way of expressing itself and since I'm not used to this aggression the aggression is manifesting itself into depression. Does this make sense? Is this familiar to anyone?

Thank You

Hi Brycen, welcome to Susan's Place! I'm not a doctor, but I know when I see someone going through the usual stages here, and you fit the bill. There's a lot of confusion to be sorted out to find out who we really are, and it takes time, and sometimes help to unravel it all. You'll meet good friends here and get great advice too. See you around the site!

Hugs, Devlyn

Greetings Brycon and welcome to Susan's.

I don't know about aggression turning to depression but I know T is reported to raise aggression. It usually comes on quickly but disperses quickly also. Depression is often anger turned on yourself. Talking to a therapist sounds like a good idea. I hope you can get things worked out.

Do you have any ways of releasing stress? Even just intense, short burst training workouts might take the edge off. Takes only 15 minutes or so but can really help. It might also help to see if caffeine intake makes things worse. Seems weird, but sometimes if I have a decent amount of caffeine, say, in the morning, the afternoon or evening crash can trigger depression. Caffeine also may increase anxiety. Not saying cut it off cold turkey or something if you have a high intake because that could be bad too but just something to note down for when you see your psychiatrist if something comes up. Just some simple things that might help while you wait idk... But yeah, guys can experience depression differently than women. Not as a rule, but frequently enough. And that changes from person to person too. While I definitely have depression of sorts, it's very different than the normal criteria.

Hi Brycen,

I find myself anxious and more easily irritated, which leads to some aggression, a few days before my next shot.  Working out hard at the gym, with heavy lifting until I hit a nice endorphin level, usually helps.

Try to take up some kind of stress reducing activity. Working out is usually a good move for a lot of reasons.

If you still find yourself depressed and angry, you may need to talk to someone about it.
