Birth state initiating contact to update birth certificate?

Feeling super creeped out, and hoping that someone can tell me how this might've happened, or if they've experienced something similar.

I applied to have my Passport updated in my new name and gender about two weeks ago. On the same day I also sent a form to Selective Service asking for an exemption letter. Both of these required the use of my birth certificate (a copy for Selective Service and the original for the passport). So they've both got that as well as copies of my name change and relevant medical documents supporting my transition. I suppose this could've come from one of them, but I don't think they're allowed to do this kind of thing.

Today I got a letter from the office in my birth state (Maryland) that amends birth certificates, dated 6/22. It was a form letter with the application to do that attached. As far as I know, I'm not legally required to have it updated and I won't need it for anything in the future once the passport is taken care of. As a result, I was not planning to update this. I know that I didn't reach out and request this information.

Has this happened to anyone? It seems like a major breach of privacy and I'm really upset about it.

When I had my name changed in NC, they automatically notified my birth state(Alaska) of the change as well. I didn't have to update my bc, but I did about two years later, lol.

Thanks! I had my name changed and updated Social Security/Driver's License/etc. back in March, so I didn't think they'd be related coming so late.

Bureaucracies aren't always the fastest.  I'd say it was likely related to being notified by the county you had your name changed in.

I received the same thing here in Florida. I was born in Florida and changed my name here, so I just assumed it was automatically generated when I changed my Driver's License. It looks like I have to fill out the form and send it in to get my birth certificate changed (no mention of being able to just go down to the county office), rather than it having been done already.

In NJ as far as I know it is required to send a copy of the court order to vital statistics.

It's recommended by not required. On Step 17 of the NJ Name change guide it says:

You should send a certified copy of the
Final Judgment to the Registrar of Vital Statistics of the State in which you were born.

I never bothered since TN will never change the gender and for the name change they amend it so you still see the old name. As long as I keep by Passport up to date, it doesn't really mater.

A friend of mine transitions years ago, when changing genders on birth certificates was never done.  In the last year she ran into major issues with trying to get senior housing. I'm not sure she ever got it straigtened out.  So, eventually, the birth certificate might be important.

Eh, it's very doable in my home state, but it isn't worth it at this point in my life. I'll probably only get it updated if I ever move out of the region, as it would be a hassle if I needed to do anything in person (which I've heard might happen).

Hmm interesting. I was born in the state of New York and I sent them a letter from my surgeon and from my endo. They sent me a letter back and just said all they needed was an affidavit filled out by my surgeon. Then they can go forth with changing the gender on my BC.

I received a letter from the DMV after I sent them my request and now all I have to do is actually get the balls to take the letter to the DMV to get my license changed. Had my name changed and that was already an uncomfortable experience given the woman kept looking at me weird. I wish they just let you send the crap in and then send you everything so you don't have to go anywhere. :p

You live close-ish. Go to the DMV on Eisenhower Avenue. Aside from the wait, it took me 5 minutes at the counter to get my name and gender marker updated, get a new registration printed, and all that. The lady was super nice and never asked for any explanation.

Blehhhhhh west county shenanigans. I have heard good things about the one in the mall? But can't personally vouch for it.
