Okay so now that I have a little time I will explain why in some cases it will go up when you change to female:

If you are under 25 you are considered a young driver, males in this case will almost always have higher premiums. Now when you hit 25 and beyond that is when it no longer factors your premium based off of gender in the same way as before. What I mean by this is in some zip codes and territories females are statistically the more dangerous drivers.

Your premium is rated not nationally but based off of where you live and how many accidents have occurred and who caused them, so while being a young driver is based nationally, everything past 25 is more local. Try and think about it like this, do you notice more females in accidents then men in your local area? If it is more expensive being female then statistically there have been higher claims and higher payouts and accidents based off of women.

Thank you for the explanation, it makes perfect sense.  So I can partly blame my soon to be ex-wife for my increased rate, she has had 3 accidents in the last few years.  :D

so congrats and its nice to know my insurance may got down, last weekish I had to put my change in the local paper, now I am waiting for the court to get back to me after the 28th. I already have a note from my doctor for the social security office to change my gender marker, I am hoping things can go fast and I a can get a accurate license ASAP. the day I do I am buying myself one of those pink "its a girl" balloons :-)

What is a Lie when it's at home? Anyone?
Is it the depressed little voice inside? Whispering in my ear? Telling me to give up?
Well I'm not giving up. Not for that part of me that hates myself. That part wants me to wither and die. not for you. Never for you.  --Loki: Agent of Asgard

Social Security Administration can get very frustrating despite being very easy.  Frustrating because exactly as posted earlier - some of the agents do not know the regulations and may demand you jump through useless hoops or refuse to provide a verification letter at the end of your business.

SSA regulation 'RM 10212.200′ requires only one of four methods to change your sex at your SSA file

     -  Birth Certificate

     -  Passport

     -  Court order

     -  Doctor's letter

(I have that full regulation posted at my site:  https://slimandme.wordpress.com/2015/07/31/another-sex-change-at-social-security/)

So, the easiest is the court order.  When you petition the court for name change, include legal sex change.  Bring a therapist and / or endocrinologist / or primary care letter.  Court order has far more uses beyond SSA as others have posted here:  bank accounts, utility accounts, insurance, loans, drivers licence.

SSA can get finicky with the medical letter.  I had to have my endocrinologist do two letters to recently re-correct SSA errors at my file.  AGH!
