"The transgender community of Southeast Nebraska has been put on alert after a group fielded reports that a man is arranging to meet transgender individuals online and assaulting them when they arrive.

More than 2,000 people received warning messages in late August urging caution for transgender people meeting strangers, community leaders said.

So far, Lincoln police don't have information to confirm anyone is committing these crimes, Chief Jim Peschong said.

The department received reports of two incidents involving transgender victims, but investigators don't believe they are related and only one involved a meeting arranged online, the chief said.

In both cases, the victims' injuries did not require extensive medical attention, he said."
