I think I'm gonna avoid this one, unless I hear many people who are critical of it right now say that it is a good portrayal of a trans women. Right now it looks really bad imo.
Some of the things that bother me are the cast and directors constant deadnaming. The are constantly referring to the character by her "male" name. It shows that they think of the characters as male and that also shows in their casting decision when they switched to Eddie redmayne from I don't remember what cis women it was but she is more famous then Eddie redmayne.
The story of Lili Elbe is a tragedy. She was the first person to get a successful vaginaplasty, but she ends up dying when they try to give her a womb implant. The story is is used as an example by some more historically inclined terfs to state that we are not real women but people who are obsessed with becoming women. a dangerous obsession at that. It bothers me that they make a movie about this at a time when concern trolls are getting op'ed eds published in the New York Times. I fear this movie could do a lot more harm then good.
I'm not gonna out right boycott this movie. I don't want to make judgement on a story when I have no idea of how they are gonna paint the story. I am just voicing my concern.
Also why not cast a women if you aren't gonna cast a trans person. People always say that hormones weren't available at the time but it's not actually true, and Lili Elbe actually looked very femme to begin withdue to the fact that she had genetic issues and never really developed masculine features. They could have easily had a trans women play the pre transition Lili Elbe with out much difficulties.
