My parents are starting to come around

I came out to my parents on the 28th of August. Things seemed to go well at first, but the next couple of weeks were kinda awkward and painful for all of us. They didn't like my name, didn't think this was really happening, and were mourning their son in some fairly painful ways.

Yesterday, they went to see a therapist of their own, and it seemed to be a turning point. The therapist told them a number of things, and they relayed a few. First, she told them to get used to the name, and to call me it when they were able. Second, she told them to leave out some of their more painful mourning statements (especially the bits about murdering their son). Third, she wants to meet me in one of their sessions. I'd be happy to do that, I think. I'm not sure if they'll actually "believe" this is really real until I start presenting, but we're on a good track I think.

And, my mum and sister bought me an outfit today, and that was a huge step.

Tamika, you can't believe how fortunate you are to have caring parents. They care enough about YOU to seek out help for THEMSELVES. That is absolutely stunning progress. Believe me, they still have you and will learn to adapt in their own way.

Chin up,

It was nearly 6 years before my mom and I went shopping for feminine clothes after I came out. I am jealous of you and happy for you. You must be doing something right so keep up the good work.

Tamika,

Congratulations. I am so glad this is turning around for you. It's great that your parents had it in them to visit a therapist. I think a lot of parents might be in denial enough that they would not bother. Sounds like they got some good advice. I would second the therapist on holding off the "...murdering my son." comments. "Good safety tip, thanks Egon."

I hope it continues to go smoothly.

Twenty years for me. It was sort of expected that I would present in tee shirts and jeans with no frills. I can't believe I went that long with the charade. But we are past that. During the past few months, Mom has gone with me several times to help me choose a few nice things. I purchased a pure yesterday that is totally fun and colorful.
