So today I'm making an appointment to go and see my GP and ask for a referral to Northampton GIC. The purpose of this is mainly for therapy but I also feel strongly about, at the very least getting on some blockers to stop my body becoming any more masculine.

Does anybody have any advice or tips on how I should approach the GP? I've never been out dressed and as my GP is in the middle of town that would be like coming out to my local neighborhood, so I'm hoping I'll be taken seriously even though I'm in guy mode.

Thanks in advance, Emily

Megan.

I didn't dress to see my GP, and only went dressed to my therapist after a year, so don't feel any pressure to do so.

Hi Emily.

I was already FT and had been on hormones for over a year, so seeing my GP dressed wasn't a problem for me.  My GP basically looked at me and said, "Yeah, I'll refer you if you like."  No questioning, no issues whatsoever.

Given that many GPs are still remarkably uninformed about transgender healthcare, it probably doesn't matter if you're dressed or not; go as you feel comfortable.  I'm a huge believer in the idea that nobody in transition need torture themselves by jumping through humiliating hoops like dressing in public when you're not mentally ready.  Go at your own pace, and presenting as male at your GP appointment is in no way a sign that you're not trans.  Some GPs may refer you instantly, some may need to screw around for a while to figure out how to treat you and determine what services are available.  Go in prepared: know what the GIC can offer, how they take referrals, etc.  Print it all out if you like and take it in a folder to give to the doctor, along with some basic FAQs about transgender stuff.  Assume the GP has never treated a trans patient before.

Good call on Northamptonshire.  Supposedly by far the shortest of the waits, but it's still a slog to get that first appointment.  Eighteen weeks from referral is the latest estimate (which compared to other GICs is positively lightspeed), but I strongly suspect that figure is very optimistic and the reality is somewhat slower; I'm still waiting.  But even so, at least you're not getting screwed by Charing Cross.

I hope it all goes well.

That's really useful information, thank you! I think I'll take an information pack in for my GP so they don't have to mess me around too much. I've already decided that I'm going to quite pointedly ask to be referred and not be wishy washy about what I want; for example "I want to begin therapy with a gender specialist at the Northampton GIC" and explain my reasoning behind said decision. CX sounds horrific, I'm so glad Northampton is my closest (by a long way too!).

Are you being referred to N'hampton then and how long have you been waiting if you don't mind my asking?

Sorry to be late to the party but while you were posting I was visiting my GP. I was so nervous, but it went really well.  Like you i asked for Northampton, so i guess it wont be long before their waiting lists go the way of the Laurels.

I didn't get dressed up for the occasion but about 10 minutes before i was due to leave I had a little panic that she is better at handling trans issues than he is, but in the end he did good and didn't even need the two line note I had written in case i couldn't spit it out.

I went fully prepared with a print out of the interim NHS protocol, the associated RCP guidelines, a pint out of web addresses for them and the Northampton GIC web site. I also downloaded and filled out the Northampton referral form as best I could which meant the GP only had to fill in a couple of boxes from my records and her details, using a big rubber stamp that felt awfully official that i was starting my journey.

My GP was very accepting but started to go down the local psychologist route at which point I corrected her that it had been changed and pulled out the interim protocol and turned to the flow chart. Then she started looking through it to see where she should send me, at which point i pulled out the referral form, that's when the big rubber stamp came out and it was all done..(if only). After that we just had a bit of a chat about why now (way too late for blockers) and a bit about the process and GICS, mainly me informing her, and finished up with her commenting my appointment was more interesting than the 4 stuffy noses she had just seen and i felt she was going to genuinely go away and spend the time to read the interim protocol and RCP guidelines.

Anyway all the best and good luck, just go prepared.

Can i just ask where one would find the interim protocol? I have found a document but I don't know if it's up to date. Sorry to derail the topic (Or maybe OP would find it useful too?)

Oooh this is super useful information, thank you so much! I will definitely be adding this to my arsenal! My appointment is nice and early in the day and I can't imagine my GP will have anything else after that which will beat my crazed ramblings!  =) good luck to you Debbie! Lets hope we don't get left alone for too long!

The relevant history section of the form is quite interesting. What kind of thing did you put in there?

In the relevant history i just put my highest level of education, that i am living with a supportive partner and for how long and my employment status.

Under gender history I put a bit about my cross-dressing history throughout life, when and who i have come out to and recent gender identity exportation.

I didn't go into much detail in any of the boxes and I expect whatever you fill in will be lots more information than would be filled out by your GP,  I left the Psychiatric history box blank as i didn't feel i could put none, after all I'm depressed and withdrawn from society etc, but my GP just wrote in "Nothing on file" and when i commented that I have some depression etc but mainly gender related and got the answer, I'm not surprised, if you weren't you wouldn't be here now.

I hope your appointment goes as easily as mine did
