American Cancer Society eases mammogram recommendations

(Reuters Health) - In a major shift, the American Cancer Society is recommending that women at average risk of breast cancer get annual mammograms starting at age 45 rather than at age 40, and that women 55 and older scale back screening to every other year.

The new guidelines, published on Tuesday in JAMA, fall more closely in line with guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a government-backed panel of experts that recommend biennial breast cancer screening starting at age 50 for most women.

I post this here because MTFs on HRT and FTMs who haven't had top surgery need to and do get breast examinations and mammograms. We can get breast cancer for sure. The guidelines have been revised but I am not sure if this is good or not. It seems like more of a cost cutting move.

Well from a european point of view Americans are rather over screened to the point where the risk of inducing cancer in someone who would NOT otherwise have got it if they hadnt been over x-rayed is almost a consideration.

In Europe we generally screen between every three and five years -and only after age 50, unless there is a particular risk factor... so to my mind every year was rather over frequent.
