Hi, I'm just wondering how soon after surgery it's ok to start swimming? I detest most exercise and hate gym's but, I've always enjoyed swimming... How long after surgery is swimming for exercise ok? I figure it's possibly the one of the better ways to exercise cause it's low impact and low resistance etc...?

Any ideas?

When you have no more open wound down there (in my case is around 4~5 months). Pretty much you don't want any infection from the chlorine or other stuff floating in the swimming pool.

The doctor who is doing the follow up on your surgery should be able to tell you. I developed an infection in there post surgically and it would have been a bad idea to go swimming before that was cleared up. Under normal conditions the outer limit would be when sex is permitted.

Ask about swimming at a beach. The salt water did amazing things for me. Admittedly I wasn't swimming but more standing in it for about 20 minutes every few days. It was cold but I felt it helped with recovery.
Yes! I'm single
And you'll have to be pretty f'ing amazing to change that

Looooool... The beaches where I live are almost Antarctic! I've done a lot of scuba diving but, I wore a 9mm full face two peice wetsuit for that... And even then it was freeeeeezing :p

Well I never asked and I went swimming within a month - but then back along (30 years ago) we were rather less cautious than is the modern trend. I suspect in reality once everything as healed, which took about 4 weeks for me, you would be fine and the advice for a longer wait is therefore largely arse covering just in case there is someone who is slower to heal.

well, I suppose Ill just have to talk to the surgeon about it and hope for the best..

I asked my surgeon if I could have a spa at 3 months, he said it's ok IF I have no open wounds as long as I shower afterwards. So I think the key component is as long as you have no open wounds which is probably something a doctor needs to be able to tell you.
I will touch a 100 flowers and not pick one.

Yeah, I think I'll just have to talk to my Dr and see how I heal.. Thanks heaps for everyone's input and stuff :)

My personal Dr let me go after around 4 to 5 months, she just wanted to make sure I was healed.

Just as a little epilogue to this thread... My surgeon told me I could safely swim after about 10-12 weeks from the surgery date. Obviously ymmv and all that. The good news is, for me at least, only a few more weeks to go.... And I'm pretty well healed as it is so, I might just go swimming soon anyway :D

Hello, your swimming pool post is timely.  Saturday marked my return to the pool, 136 days after SRS!  It was such an exciting positive experience I even posted it on Twitter.  Felt amazing and very affirming.  I even shared a more revealing look.  One I would not have prior to SRS.
Doctor said I could go swimming at 12 weeks.
Thank you,
Anne
