http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Police-Transgender-Woman-Lured-to-Alley-Before-Her-Murder-333737281.html

NBC Washington/By  Jackie Bensen  10/18/2015

"Police are investigating the possibility that a transgender woman who was shot to death Thursday was lured to the alley where she was killed.

And News4 has learned that police were called to the same area about a half-hour before 21-year-old Zella Ziona was killed Thursday. They were responding to the report of a group of people fighting, and one person being hit with a stick."

Transgender woman's family believes murder was hate crime

http://www.wusa9.com/story/news/2015/10/17/transgender-womans-family-believes-murder-was-hate-crime/74154686/

Very troubling that the family member sourced in the article asked the reporter misgendered the victim and asked the news outlet to deadname her. Even more troubling that the news outlet agreed.

Looks like even after her murder, her family wouldn't accept her identity. Maybe they didn't know better, but the reporter covering the story should have.

Police consider hate crime charges in murder of Md. transgender woman

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/police-consider-hate-crime-charges-in-murder-of-maryland-transgender-woman/

CBS News/By/ Crimesider Staff/ CBS/AP / October 19, 2015, 11:01 AM

"GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- Was it embarrassment that led to the murder of a 21-year-old transgender woman in Maryland?

"Police say 20-year-old Rico LeBlond shot and killed Zella Ziona, whose legal name was DeAndre Smith, on Oct. 15, because Ziona "began acting flamboyantly towards LeBlond and greatly embarrassed Leblond in front of his peers," according to charging documents obtained by CBS affiliate WUSA."
