So I've thought about buying a wig but don't know how to find a good one. My preference is a nice looking red pixie style one. Just am hesitant because I want it too look realistic not like a cheap halloween one.

Hi Catherine,

I know this will sound confronting, but do go to a wig shop and get fitted. They can really help with a style that suits you and will help with care etc.

When I was pre everything (and totally terrified!) I went and got a wig from a shop - shaking in my male clothes as I walked in

As the girl who helped me said. Basically there are two main groups of customers; women having chemo and transgender women. We welcome both and understand their fears.

A proper wig shop - as opposed to a party wig outlet - is where you should be looking. This could be something you're wearing every day 24/7 so you need something of reasonable quality. It doesn't have to be real hair (mine is micro fibre) but it does need to be realistic.

I can't agree more about getting a consultation from a stylist in a good shop. A little research will put you in one. I was extremely nervous when I first went into the shop where I purchased my wig. I found the women very helpful and caring. I just explained my circumstances and everything rolled on from there. Finding the wig that fits your face is so important. Wigs also can be styled, trimmed, and this helps with bangs fit and thinning puffy areas.

I arrived home after getting my 'trim' and my wife's first comment was: 'That's Cute!' Can't be better than that!

I could never gather enough courage to go to a store, it also didn't help that majority of stores were in questionable areas I felt wouldn't be open to the transgender community (I'm sure that's all in my head.)  Eventually I hope to get to that point where I'm more comfortable and go to a store.

I bought my wig from http://www.wigs.com, found the site to have a wide selection of wigs, as well as a pretty helpful buyer's guide (http://www.wigs.com/look-learn/wig-buyers-guide).  My wife helped as well.  Lucky for me, my wig looks super cute, and very happy with it.  They all look realistic, and have a wide range of lengths, styles, and colors.

Good luck with your search!

+1 on wigs.com.  Good quality wigs are expensive, and currently they are having a half price sale on wigs by Louis Ferre.  Louis Ferre wigs range from good quality synthetic to really stunning human hair, and there are some insane deals available there right now.  I just got my first one from there and I am very happy with it.

So if you are down on your dough (as the Village People say) or are just greedy and want to try a few different hair colors, and/or really don't want to walk into a wig salon, then go check out the sale.  After all, what girl can resist a half price sale on some quality merchandise?

The sale is on through the end of October, and if I can scrape up a few more clams, then I am going to try going blonde.

I've personally used Amazon.Com multiple times. I have tried the exotic route just to experiment  ut, I've found if you stick close to your natural color there is less shock between your natural color and wig. I just experimented until I found something I liked. I've spent big bucks on a wig but find I like the cheaper ones better. I've also been in public a lot with the cheap ones... if you style them no one is the wiser. I actually had a woman come up to me and asked where I got my hair done, it was super cute. Good luck xoxoxox

Cheap wigs are just that. Without a lot of money to experiment with you will go broke quickly sorting out what color(s), length and styles look good for your face/head. It is difficult keeping styles and colors seperated in your eyes during try-ons. Wig shops will not have all colors and all styles on the shelf

Greener, actually. According to people in the know, there are three populations that keep wig shops in business, religious Jews (who can't show their hair in public), cancer victims, and us.

The first time I felt I passed was also right after I went to a wig shop in San Francisco and had one fitted and styled. Yes, they do cut wig hair. I had everything else pretty much down, but the pieces I had were terrible.

So, the advice you are getting here is very good. Just eat some humble pie and find a nice quiet wig shop, schedule an appointment for a private consultation if you wish. But do it. Okay? Trust me on this one. You won't regret it and you will feel like a new woman afterward.
