I have a Love/Hate relationship with clothing

This is mostly just a rant about how much fun shopping and thinking of the ways my new cloths and old can be combined before I realize nothing fits me, they never have my size and even when its big enough for me its almost inevitable that it wont fit correctly.

The most recent struggle has been finding a coat for the winter, the temperature has been dropping here in massachusetts rather steadily and already we have had a few 35ish degree days which makes skirt and t-shirt a issue if I can't find a coat, Pants are largely impossible due to belly fat and lack of hips and i have been to at least a half dozen stores looking for a warm clearly feminine coat and its just impossible. on the rare occasion I find something I kinda like it simply dose not fit, usually the sleaves are too short or its just tight on the shoulders. A warm coat is sorta defeated if 6 inches of my arms are exposed.

I don't exepect any cures for this I just needed to complain about it, I have been doing so well on the emotional front this week untill today when after failing at other places I went to a big coat store spent an hour and came away very cold and empty handed, talking with friends about how tough it was had me half to tears and more upset than I have been all week, and its still hitting me now. It dose not help that I am too poor to buy anything really nice, but even then it wouldent fit by a long shot, they just dont make much in the way of clothing for 250lb women who are 6 feet tall in there heels.

I was in you neck of the wood last weekend well Boston/Maine and I ran into a place in Damariscotta ME a womans clothing store that only sells 12 and up with short/reg/tall versions the place was great my sister and I shopped for quite a while.  I know it's like 3 hours from you but if you feel like some seafood and some shopping might be fun. Women of Substance is the name they have a website.

hmm looks like according to mapquest it would be about three and a half hours if I left right now at 3:30am with zero traffic, accounting for boston traffic it would likely be a 4 hour trip each way plus say minimum of a hour of shopping a 9 hour trip to buy a coat.

ok I just wrote something way longer and very negitive about that type of driving but it was not going to help anyone, if you want the full explination I will give it but to keep it simple and less awful. I get car sick with any drive over about 35-40 minutes and hate seafood.

I love shoes, but because I'm nearly 5'10" I wear a size 11. For some reason it's a non-standard size and size 12 is often way too big for me. I recently found some Ivanka Trumps at Nordstroms that were 11.5 and fit great, except they are still a bit tight on my right big toe. Shoe stretchers will help, but I have very few shoes that fit perfect.
Jackets can be an issue for me as well because I have my mom's wide shoulders. If they women's large doesn't fit me, I either have to get it tailored or give up because XL is usually way to large for my midsection (that could easily fit in a M). I have a list of brands I keep updated in my head that I know will fit and have the styles I like, and I almost always only buy V necked or scoop necked tops.
As much as I like the skirts I own, I nearly always wear jeans or running shorts. And I have yet to find and buy a dress I liked that fit well everywhere, partly because I'm tall and partly because I'm not heroin chic. Still, since shoulderpads are coming back kinda, I don't need them and can buy the outfit and rip out the pad and have it fit awesome like my mom did in the 70s and 80s.

i ordered a dress online that came the other day and i love it so much even though it maybe runs a bit short and the sleeves are definitely by about an inch it fits great otherwise but i usually have a problem with dresses with a comfortable length. really makes me upset lol

So, not being overly helpful here, but I went coat shopping this weekend at Burlington Coat Factory.  I found a coat, about thigh-length, black wool, that fits my body perfectly.  Except that the sleeves could be about an inch longer and the shoulders need about 2 more inches of room in them for me to have a full range of motion, like when reaching out my car window or overhead, or crossing my arms.  But, I think I look SO cute in it, and its fits me really well if I'm just walking around in it.  The things we suffer through to look pretty, eh?  LOL.

Well you could add an inch of some nice cloth yourself...
there are very nice borders for example...
and it would be selfmade, not a standard product...

There are services who can add very nice cloth or borders for a small fee.
They can make it professionally.
They can also make any kind of changes for a better fit...

Sorry if I hijack the thread for a while  !

The sleeve cuffs on the dress in the two previous posts are already long-ish and made of a different fabric. This makes it exceptionally easy to make them longer if you make yourself familiar with basic sewing techniques.
I would turn the dress inside out, open the lining (if present), remove the cuffs at the seams, replicate longer cuffs from suitable fabric, attach the new ones and close the lining again.
Voilà, done.

My problem with this dress would be the height where the waist is. I am tall and I have a long back, so the waist of most dresses sits visibly too high for my body.
Then there is of course the shoulder to waist ratio that makes everything either too narrow at the shoulders or too wide at the waist for me.

I have learned that complaining usually does not make problems go away, and that I have to do something if I want things to change.
When I see something I desperately want need and it just won't fit, I can either change it, have it changed or make my own. The sewing machine is my friend    ...

It was just meant as hint, a belt and other appliances can really make a difference.
