"A petition calling for a transgender woman to serve a prison sentence in a female prison has attracted more than 10,000 signatures in under 24 hours.

Tara Hudson, 26, from Bath, was sentenced to 12 weeks in jail after admitting assault.

She has had reconstructive surgery and lived as a woman all her adult life but, because she is legally a man, was sent to the all male HMP Bristol.

Her supporters claim it has placed her in danger of abuse and sexual violence.

Hudson was sent to prison on Friday after pleading guilty, at Bath Magistrates' Court, to an assault by beating on 26 December last year."

What I don't understand is that she apparently had SRS (and BA) and did not get her gender recognition certificate. What stopped her? If she could get all of those surgeries, how come not the paperwork to go along with it?

I agree she shouldn't be in a male prison but I think there is more to the story.

"A trans woman has been granted leave to appeal her sentence, after being sent to a men's prison.

It emerged yesterday that 26 year old trans woman Tara Hudson has been sentenced to 12 weeks in the all-male Bristol Prison after an assault.

Current policy states that a Gender Recognition Certificate is required for trans prisoners to be placed in the correct prison for their gender, which Ms Hudson did not have despite living full-time as female for six years."

If she has had srs, then she should go to a female prison, if she hasnt, it's more tricky, the saftey issues in a male prison are tricky, but there are as many saftey issues putting her in a female prison, women can rape, and beat just as easily as men can.

In the UK the law is that if you have a gender recognition certificate you will be placed according to that gender. I don't think that surgery is required.

In the USA it doesn't matter. You go by your genitals. The end. However, many prisons will segregate trans inmates. Also, San Francisco is starting to place trans people by their gender identity soon.
