I've done a quick once through on some of the wig stores listed in the shopping area and I'm totally overwhelmed.

How do you choose the right wig?

If you have the confidence to go into a wig shop and ask for help that would be best if not then what you do is need to know year head size and shape. Then pick a style that bests suites you and your face based on that info. Hugs

Or if you don't have the confidence to go yet like me for a time. Look on Amazon at the cheap $10 once not perfect but it could give you an idea of wha r works and what doesn't.

But it's my experience wig store workers are more the happy to help out.

Because of my understanding with my wife, going to the wig store was not an option for me, so I did all my wig shopping online.  I chose Wigs.com in no small part because they supply a plastic head cover you can wear to try the wig  on once and if it is not to your liking you can return it.

I was planning on buying a wig anyway, but I got lucky and ended up doing it in October, when they have their annual half price sale on Louis Ferre wigs.

I spent the better part of a week doing homework, researching colors by looking at color charts online and watching Youtube review videos (highly recommended), and ended up taking three or four pages of written notes on a yellow legal pad, before narrowing the choices down to three final wig models and three or so possible colors.

After spending a night sleeping on the final choices, I pulled the trigger.  The first one I bought was a medium length wig with bangs, in something very close to (maybe a shade darker than) my natural mousy brown color.

I really liked that wig, but felt it was maybe a little too conservative a choice considering the way that I dress.

A few weeks later, just before the sale ended, I decided to get another wig, this one a lace front in strawberry blond, which is a color my hair tends to bleach toward if I get enough sun in the summer.

I love them both, and I will probably get a third one in a fiery red (I'm one quarter Irish, and I tend to gravitate towards reds).

All in all it was a pleasurable experience.  My advice is:

1) spend some time analyzing the shape of your face, and think about what hair styles will look good on you.

2) If you go with your natural color, be prepared to look like your sister.  That may be a good or bad thing, depends on how you feel about it.  Think about what other colors would look good on you.  Like I said, my hair naturally bleaches in the summer to a butterscotch or strawberry blond, so that is one look that I chose.  With my skin tone, I think red would work pretty well also.

3)  Most important, have fun.  If you want to experiment, get come cheap wigs on Ebay, try several different looks, and then spend the big bucks on a really good one.

Thank you all - youtube here I come and/or a wig shop too if I can find one not too close to home as I'm only out to my wife and sister.  ;)

Choose a style that is likely to be low maintenance and something that approximates how women wear their hair every day. Size and fit is really important. Something that suits the shape of your face and size of your head while enhancing your female features but covering masculine ones (especially the forehead/brow). Chose something that has the right colour for your complexion and is the right style for your age (for example, don't buy something that would suit a twenty year old if you are much older)... nothing makes a wig stand out more if it is a poor match! The breathability of the wig is important too, you don't want to be unduly sweating. Microfibre is fairly cheap without looking cheap and it is easy to look after... daily gently brush and weekly wash and condition. Remember, this is something you may very well be wearing every day so it needs to look natural enough and be comfortable to wear but not wear out too quickly.

One thing you can do is call wig shops in the area, simply explain to them you are transgender, looking for a wig and would they have a problem serving you.  If they do, go on and call another shop.  I did that with a local shop about a mile from my house.  I knew it was run by an older lady so I wasn't sure what kind of reception I would get when I called her.  What I got was, "I have no problem at all.  When would you like to make an appointment to come in?"  If you don't have any luck, you might contact a support group in Orlando or Chicago.  Most groups will know the transgender friendly shops.  Remember, they are in business to make money and most places are happy to have you if you're spending money.

Carly and Ms Grace are right about the research but let me add this.  Look at the women around you who are a similar age.  Look at their hairstyles and the shapes of their faces.  Try to see those who have a similar shaped face and work from there on what will look good for you.

I started by buying cheapo ones of Fleabay to see what styles I liked and what worked, as I narrowed it down i bought more expensive ones. One day I'll make my mind up and buy the real thing but at the moment I'm still having fun experimenting.

Thanks for all the help.

I ended up at Simply Wigs in Merrillville Indiana.  I would highly recommend them.
I dropped them a note on Wednesday about their acceptance of Transgenders in the store.  Their response was perfect.  "No problems and if you would like we have a screen that we can put up for privacy."
I went in a few days later unannounced and threw Karen off guard when I mentioned I had sent an email to the "bigwigs" [love the email address!].  She went looking for anything specially marked and I corrected her saying I was looking for one of the female style wigs.  She was a little embarrassed which took any tension out of the air.  We had the most pleasurable chat.  I was probably there for an hour or more.  We chatted about wig care and more importantly why I was there.

She is now better educated in what it is to be transgender.

BTW - the wig is in my avatar.

Youcam Makeup is a good app if you want to test hair styles and colors in private. It's a free android app.
