So I have my first endo appointment December 1st. I have been trying to lose weight and have I am now 184lbs and was 190lbs. I am 5' 7" so basically what I am asking is will this cause any issues with hrt. I know losing weight after will be harder but is there any other issues my weight can cause?

Hi Michelle,

With those statistics, that puts your BMI at 28.82. According to that calculation that puts you in the Pre-obese range, which is defined as being from 25.0-29.99

Your ideal BMI should see your weight down round 132lbs which would put you in the middle of normal rage.

Depending on your state of health, HT may or may not have an implication on your health. However if you are having cardiac issues, HT will not improve it. In your current state, the effectiveness of HT may be impeded by the extra weight and place addition stress on your liver, depending on the type and delivery of HT.

Your Endo is best qualified to make these assessments, as he will have (or at least should have) the data from a full blood test ordered prior to putting you on HT, as well as having completed a physical assessment of you.

Irrespective of HT, your current situation is leaving you open to a range of health issues you may not want. Apart from the obvious cardiovascular family, diabetes II can be triggered by a range of issues.

The beauty of transition, it allows us to examine a broad range of lifestyle issues we may not have considered otherwise.

Speak to as soon as I've finished cooking the turkey for Thanksgivivng.

My endo brought up my weight yesterday when we were going over my bloodwork, "Your cholesterol is really good considering your weight"... I was sitting there thinking:  I'm 5'5, I've lost almost 30lbs in 2 months, I'm only 155 now!  But, lo and behold, checked my BMI when I got home, I'm still clinically overweight.  I don't feel it, I'm smaller than I've been in years, and I expect the number to drop further since starting Androcur, but it was funny to hear him say it.

My problem is I quit smoking and drinking 7 years ago and almost immediately gained a lot of weight. My doctor at the time decided that wasn't normal so did a blood panel and found out my thyroid is slow. So im good at gaining weight and bad at losing it. I was 3 years ago at 200lbs so I do lose it but its slow and comes back so easy. Drives me crazy. My family doctor is always bugging me about it because I also have asthma so the extra weight doesn't help any. So I guess this means its time to get back on my bike again.

Hi Michelle,

As you have a thyroid condition, it may be time to have a chat to a specialist. Your Endo should be able to look into that for you. Make sure he is aware of it, as he should also check your T3 and T4 while he's checking you out. Thyroid is a pretty important organ, and needs to be attended to. Especially for HT matters.

Don't expect the medicos to be on the forefront, cutting edge of transgender issues. Most of them aren't, and fudge their way through, adopting in some parts, a minimalist approach. Something like putting unleaded fuel into a racing car. Sure it'll get round the track, but it won't reach it's full potential. Always make sure you fully understand what they are doing and ask lots, lots of questions.

Speak to you as soon as I finish raking the leaves.

Why don't you simply fix your thyroid ? There are a lot of treatment for defective thyroids. (unless you are an endormorph)

I was on medication for it but my family doctor really didn't have a clue short of just take these pills. They weren't really helping and my super crappy insurance makes it financially impossible to go to a specialist. So im hoping my Dr im seeing for hrt to can help with the thyroid to.

I am not a doctor so this is just opinion.

I would think HRT would be administered more gradually and vital information reviewed more thoroughly for signs of change. You will be advised to eat differently and exercise to lose weight.

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving, Catherine :)

Absolutely, thank you Brooke. I hope yours is peaceful and reflective.

I celebrate thanksgiving each and every day. When I jump out of bed and realise what some people did to get me to where I am today, I can't help thanking them.

Speak to you as soon as I've finished the washing up.

Eating too many carbs can increase fat deposition. Cutting carbs (not calories) and increasing fat (including saturated fat) to feel satiated is effective for many in their weight loss and improves health (blood pressure, triglycerides, HDL, etc). Eric Westman, Jeff Volek, Gary Taubes, Sally Fallon, Peter Attia, Stephen Phinney, Zoe Harcombe are experts among many others who have brought this to light. Also, Banting from the 1800's, Richard Mackarness (1958), Walter L Voegtlin (1975), Stefansson, explorer in the Arctic, Blake Donaldson.

Female hormones + less testosterone will definitely increase weight gain...and cellulite.
I am not a medical doctor, nor a scientist - opinions expressed by me on the subject of HRT are merely based on my own review of some of the scientific literature over the last decade or so, on anecdotal evidence from women in various discussion forums that I have come across, and my personal experience
