Promethea

I think this is the best place for this thread, but if it's not, feel free to move it.

This ugly, non passing, still legally male, trans woman with no exceptional skills or degree, and who is just beginning to work on her voice,  just got a job!!!!!  ;D ;D  ;D I'm starting next Tuesday!

A lot of you have transitioned on the job and most were accepted by your employers without any problems, but getting a job while openly trans is much more difficult. Since the company that hired me is present in several countries, I thought the information would be useful for others looking for a job, and maybe others can contribute with their own experiences and we can build a list.

This company is called RCI, and it's a timeshare exchange company. No, I won't be selling timeshares, I'll just be providing customer service over the phone to Brazilian members of the network. According to Wikipedia it has offices in the US, England, Mexico, Ireland, Philippines,India, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and here in Uruguay.

They've told me my legal name would not leave the HR office, and everything else, including security related stuff, would be under Promethea. That was because I asked and mentioned my legal name during the interview process (I had to fill out an application and sign it, so...), they didn't bring it up. Before that nobody questioned my name nor my gender, and it went on normally after that.

This leaves me one step closer to my plans!

First off, if that is your real picture, you are not ugly.

With all the law suits going on these days, I think companies are more careful about discrimination. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen or that its done in a subtle way that can't be proven. The public is more aware these days of transgenders and its not as unheard of as it once was. That being said, you have guts not letting your position stand in your way. I would hope that you don't run into any real problems at work.

I get the feeling that more problems tend to arise in jobs that are traditionally male and are still made up mainly of "macho" males. Those that are against having females, homosexuals or transgenders. I like to think we are getting better at managing prejudice in those areas, but I'm not sure if its real or just for show.

Congratulations on your new job! I hope that you enjoy it and meet some friends.

Oh, you're too kind. And also, you don't see all the photos I don't post :P The most efficient editing tool is the delete button. But that's not the point, anyway.

This is Uruguay, it's not sue country. Civil lawsuits are rare here, trans people can't afford them, judges aren't friendly and it'd be very difficult to prove you weren't hired on the basis of being trans. And we're still constantly swept under the carpet. Which for me gives even more credit to this company.

And two weeks in, they have been amazing.

There has only been one incident, which wasn't even an incident. On the van that brings us back to the city someone misgendered me, I corrected her, she got kind of defensive ("I don't know how to treat you, I haven't met any trans people before, I have no experience with this " all coming out of her mouth quite quickly and loudly) so I simply didn't continue that line of conversation. That was it, but the next day someone from HR came to ask me if anybody has said anything mean to me on the van (obviously someone told them). I told them no, and explained what someone may have read that way, and my view on it, what I expect, so that was it. Oh, and they also made sure I'm using the ladies' restroom!
