Gatekeeping and feeling conflicted about being honest vs being "good"

It is a little ridiculous, right? She's currently has a reputation for doing gender work because she was the therapist who first saw/worked with Dr. Lydia Foy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lydia_Foy). We're actually surprisingly progressive over here in the ROI, but as a small country that's rapidly shifting to an LGBT friendly mindset, we don't have a lot of the framework that we need in place. Like, we just opened our first adolescent transgender clinic. Before this, any trans kids who popped up would have to fly to England for support services.

I think that she might be open to learning, as I get the strong feeling it's ignorance above prejudice. I feel a bit tremulous at the prospect of being an educator when I'm such a novice myself, though! But maybe it's the best call for everyone.

Based on my experience, it's not uncommon for therapists to not only have no clue about transgender issues, but to not realize just how ignorant they are.  The ignorance I can forgive, as society is full of utter misinformation on the subject, the refusal to learn I can't.

The first person I was referred to for gender therapy had some narrow and antequated ideas of what being transgender was about, to the point that she couldn't really hear what I was saying.  I supposed I could have stuck around and tried to re-educate her, but why should I be paying for her education?  Nor was I willing to waste my time.

My current gender therapist was someone recommended by our local LGBT center, and she's pretty good.

I'm familiar with a quite a few Gender Therapists, worked with quite a few, and read a bit too about how therapy, case/life management skills and standards of care occur in side a well-grounded gender practice.  I am, however, not an expert. 

Sooo, FWIW: From what is written here it would seem a different therapist might be in order.
