I went to the mall yesterday and had a really nice girl match me for dermablend, it went great... and the result was incredible in the store. She used the Cover Creme and Setting Powder and it looked great, my wife and I both could not see blue shadow which has been haunting me lately as I havent been able to cover it the way I want. Ive decided I would rather see thick than shadow and went for it. I was happy with the coverage and the texture. She cleaned it off as I had some other things to do afterward, rang me up and I was excited.

Got home last night and tried to reapply and I can see right through it! So can my wife, so its not mental.

I feel as though I did it the same way, but its not working at home. When I tried to clean it off I was red and irritated where it was applied.... ??? I used the same remover she did in the store

Ill try again, but wondering where I went wrong :-\

Rita, it is hard to know. Are you using the same techniques she used and layer it enough to help give you the coverage the person in the store was able to give you. Hugs

Thanks Mariah :)

I thought I was doing it the same, she only did one layer. Ill spend more time and see if I can get it, was just a bit frustrated and venting
  •

Mariah

Totally understandable and please vent away. Keep trying. Also are you using the same brushes or other items they were using. Hugs

I don't use dermablend, but I've found that a duo-fibre stippling brush works best for my liquid foundation and concealer. I pour the concealer on the pallet and dab the brush, then apply with very small circles and slightly twisting the brush. I wait two to three minutes and touch up with more if necessary. It doesn't seem to "cake" and hides everything well. Then just foundation power to set it with a large powder brush (with very soft bristles). And go lightly over the beard area, so as not to wipe any of the liquid foundation away. Don't press, more of a light whisk and again in small circles. Hope it helps. The first few times I tried, I could still see my shadow. The other thing that I noticed, a good moisturizer before you apply foundation will help with irritation from shaving and from further makeup application.

She is a professional. You are not. It will take some practice to achieve the look you got at the mall. Stick with it and experiment.

Dermablend is tricky to work with. It has an odd texture to it, more of a gel than a liquid or creme. Sometimes I could get it to work perfectly just like the people at the cosmetic counter had, other times it looked like I had slathered on plaster with a trowel. I eventually gave up and switched to a Lancome foundation.

Ive been using lancomme teint idole ultra for the last 6 months, but the coverage wasnt as good as I wanted. Im about out so I figured I would try the dermablend. Yes it is a odd texture... and Im using a sponge like she used and dabbing, I also tried a stippling motion with a brush. I didnt spend enough time with it Im sure, Ill do some more and hopefully get it down. Thanks for the replies and the tips ;D

Ive also been a very light layer person, as I wanted to stay away from thick, its been ok so far... but Ive been trying to take a lot of pics lately and I see right through it and it drives me nuts

any tips on doing multiple layers? Is it just add on top? Powder in between? I seem to make a mess if I do more than one layer or product on top of the other... Ive also tried the yellow, orange, red concealers, lipsticks, etc... but havent nailed it yet. I guess I thought the DB would just kill it for me, and it was a expensive lesson that it doest... yet :D

I use liquid, so I let it sit on my skin while I do other things. I give the liquid 5 min or so (no powder), and reapply where needed. I only use powder for setting the "final product". I use either MAC or Benefit so it'll be a little different I'm sure. MAC on my bad days, Benefit on my good days, and Kate Von D for contouring.

Yep - working with Dermablend is a little like working with spackle. It's thick and doesn't flow or spread evenly.

I gave up and ditched it and went with a lighter textured foundation that would spread evenly.

Maybe you could go back to the store and find the person and ask her how she applied it to you?

Rita, Don't get discouraged. I haven't used dermablend products but remember it takes time and practice to get good at doing your make up. Just want to throw out a few more comments that might help. Be aware of the lighting where you do your make up. The color value of light bulbs varies and affects how we perceive colors. Your skin looks a little different under incandescent, fluorescent and natural sunlight etc. etc. Bathrooms are notorious for bad lighting. Check your self out with a good mirror in different areas of the house under different light and go outside in the sunlight and do the same. Not in the bright harsh sun but on a porch or patio. You might be surprised at how you see yourself. One last tip quit taking selfies to check your make up. Your are only going to make yourself crazy. Cameras will pic up every flaw in a persons skin even stuff us mere mortals never see and the flash makes it worse. There is a reason highly paid make up artists spend hours doing the faces of already flawless skinned models, cameras are brutal. Cut yourself some kindness and use mirrors and get input from friends if you can.

I wont be using it today, as I dont have the balls (hehe ::)) to go to the christmas gathering as Rita, and tomorrow Im busy so sunday I will spend some quality time trying to get it to work right... crosses fingers :)

Well it might also be a matter of lighting.

There are special lamps which show certain features as favourably...
for example lamps which make fruit look more fresh...
its also possible it was soft lighting so it would make the makeup appear more solid...

This product for example covers pretty well and is easy to apply:

Its even organic so its not much trouble if its not removed completely in the evening... no aggressive cleaners necessary...

Used to be Dermablend came with a little small flat spatula about an inch long.  I would take that spatula and make like three streaks of DB then blend with a fingertip and flatten with a sponge.  Seemed to work for me.  Also you talked about your skin being irritated.  A couple of tips if you don't already know them.  Take whatever type razor you use, shave with it two or three times and put the razor or the blade, if it's detachable, away.  Then when you're ready for an evening out, use that blade you put away.  Shaving with a brand new razor then putting makeup over it can irritate the skin.  Also, try to let your skin rest for an hour after shaving before applying makeup.

Others have mentioned light. It may be hard to find one but I have a lighted makeup mirror that has filters for different light.  You simply pick the type of lighting you'll be under and use that filter to check your makeup.

First let me tell you I don't recognize what you are using, so just giving general tips.

Make sure to also use the same kind of tools e.g. brushes, that remotely look like what they used at the store.

Apart from that, I will second the lighting thing. I *did notice* that at the MAC store where I was given my first demo, that lighting was favorable to concealing what daylight reveals. If I didn't want to see the blueness below the concealer, I wouldn't have seen it. But I did. So, I complained and made guy apply more layers. Damn, it was still visible but I moved on because what we got to was a big improvement to what it was before.

I also noticed in start that my face looked just fine at nights but daylight was a killer. Daylight is still less favorable. Also, some sorts of lights make my everyday make up turn green so that is also a prob to have on mind.

So, what I found best works for me is apply some lipstick on face before concealer. That helps killing the blueness, in my case purpleness. I can see it done well in the mirror but female colleagues confirm it too... what I wear does look like greasy make up when one comes close, but no traces of beard shadow are seen either from far away or in close ups.

But then again, I have already had multiple face laser treatments. I did lose a lot of hair compared to what I started from. That said, here is what I do. I somehow have big doubt it will work before any treatment, so if you would like to try, the general idea is primer + lipstick(s) + concealer(s) + primer + powder. I skip the foundation that would be between concealer and powder. If you would like to try, attempt to get a store to give you a free or a cheap demo. Then go out and make good photos so you can see results.

*hugs*

P.S.
Let me also tell one fail of mine. I got recommendation for Dior's Forever foundation. Oh my, that thing is made for those who don't deal with 6pm beard and beard shadow. It also shatters away. I personally couldn't cover a pimple with it for long. So, now I got a bottle to spend and would rather gift it to somebody who needs it.  ;D

I don't know if this will help but I'll share how I use dermacolor foundation, I think it shares a similar consistency and coverage with dermablend.

After moisturizing my skin I take the tail end of a brush, pick up some foundation and swipe it on the back of my hand. I allow it to warm up while I'm applying my eyeliner, curling my eyelashes and applying mascara.

That takes me about 5 minutes. By then the foundation has a much creamier and workable texture. I don't have a beard shadow, but a birthmark next to my nose and a small patch of roseacea. I brush the dermablend on with a small concealer brush and then blend the edges with a sponge using a rolling motion. Once I'm satisfied with the coverage I set it with translucent powder on a puff using the same motion. I dust any extra powder away before going in almost all over with a liquid foundation, kind of dabbing it on with a beauty blender. It took a lot of trial and error but it seems to work well for me.

Persevere! I found the best way to become happy with my makeup was to make sh!t loads of mistakes! Laugh when it doesn't go to plan rather than get frustrated!

Well Im getting along great with the dermablend now ;D

I found for me, that using a finger has worked best. The stuff does have a strange consistency and "warming" it under light or I just sat on it while I did my primer and surfed the web... lol but  then it was a bit oily. So just sort of stirring a fingertip in it softens it up. Then I apply with the finger and blend it off with a sponge. Im using the powder on top and its doing exactly what I needed it to and I can go nearly all day without seeing the shadow and I dont feel its too heavy or thick

More madness over this stuff....

the match was perfect in store, the match is perfect in natural light... say outside

however, my house is full of those pigtail bulbs... but my room had incandescents when I said all was good, I changed them over to pigtails yesterday (because the others were getting too hot)

now the dermablend looks orange under pigtail light :-\ so at home, where I spend most of my time in makeup, I look orange or heavily tanned in the face/neck... which for some reason, to me, makes me look manly ... but if I walk out on the porch, perfect color... ???

the lancome stuff does not suffer from the color shift, but doesnt cover the blue shadow enough... back to square one with 90 bucks less in my pocket :-\
