Ok... so i burnt my hand on monday... and by today (Thursday) half has already bubbled and popped and is now showing raw fresh flesh underneath and the other half is beginning to bubble.

Every slight touch of it hurts so god damn much! and cos it's on the back of my hand, sleeves are really doing my head in... but it's winter almost and cold and i need sleeves  :(

I had it wrapped today in dressing, but it didn't really help much as something was constantly on it making it hurt.

Does anyone know of any tips i can do to keep it out of the way of stuffs? It hurts real bad still.

Ouch Wishy, I'm sorry to hear that!

Can you see a doctor about it? Serious burns are nothing to fool around with. There's a danger of infection, not to mention scarring... which a doctor can help minimize.

Sounds like a second degree burn there champ. I agree with Kate, see a doctor.

Otherwise I suggest going to your local chemist (drug store) and ask if they have an dressings specifically for burns or can suggest a burn ointment - something with anisthetic in it to take the edge off the pain.

Just roll your sleeve up a bit?

Otherwise an ice pack for the pain and swelling (but not directly on it, put something on it first so the ice is not directly in contact - actually plastic wrap is a good emergency dressing for burns as it keeps the moisture in and contaminants out), Take some standard old pain killers (whatever you normally have in the house) and leave it to air a bit so that it forms a scab. Only cover it if you need to go out or there is risk you will contaminate it.

Burns suck.

Well I know of two things for burns. I raised 3 children using these methodologies. Ice and Vit E. Ice will get the heat out of the cells. When you burn yourself the heat in the cells keeps cooking them for a few minutes. The next remedy is Vit E. D-alpha tocoperol. What I usually do is get a Vit E. capsule, 400 mg, pierce it and squeeze some on the area then apply ice. Usually people use one ice cube and stop when it melts but I find it takes about 2 ice cubes. Now, you need to know, that the Vit E. will hurt for a minute or so but after that it heals very quickly.

By now it's a bit late to get the heat out, but you are right: for the next time, that's the first thing to do. Ice isn't necessarily the best option, though; immersing the burnt area in water or keeping it under running water for at least a quarter hour takes care of the heat without running a risk of frostbite. The water doesn't have to be ice cold, either -- anything up to lukewarm works.

Treating the burn afterwards, the main thing is to protect the area so that it can heal. If you dress it yourself, use a bandage intended for burns, as regular ones may stick to the skin, irritate it and rip it open. This too is mainly advice for the future, though: I agree with the others that this would be a really good time to see a doctor.

Ouch.

i set out to get some burn ointment from a chemist today while at college.... but like a dumbass i forgot my money  :-\

And i really am considering checking in at the docs with it. But i cant get a doc now until next thursday. Which is a bummer and it might have healed up by then.

I'm going to try and keep it aired for now - but it really is just a pain in the ass in the way pain and it feels like it's taking forever to heal! It keeps getting bits of fluff trapped in the torn and hard bits of skin and washing it REALLY hurts!!!!

Use it as a burn ointment.  Clean the burned area and apply egg white.

I swear, we've forgotten all of the old remedies.

Well, last night when I read this thread I was going to suggest something my mom used to use, but I was afraid that you kitty cats were going to laugh at me.  Oh well, I will say it anyway....cover your burns with onions.  I'm serious!  :P it alleviates the burning sensation and helps with cicatrization.  Of course, there is always a more medical approach:  ;D

Thanks for all the help guys! That website was very useful, Tink! ^.^

And yeah, i decided to give it some air and let it scab over... so it started scabbing over and this morning when i woke up, the skin/scabby bits and cracked and where it had cracked it bled. Is that normal? ???

Yes, if you do that, you get that result.  Now that you've done that, you need to be careful it doesn't get infected.  An antibiotic salve and bandage are your best choice.

Yes, I've heard of doing that, but I've never had the courage to try it.
