Anyone pay nothing for top surgery?- Financial experiences with top surgery

Has anyone on here had top surgery fully or mostly covered? Care to share your experiences? In fact anyone care to share their experiences in choosing a surgeon and paying for surgery?

Just a reminder, even if insurance will cover the procedure, you will still be responsible for copays/deductibles. Those can actually be quite high on some plans, so I'd recommend calling your insurer and confirming what you'd end up paying.

They could also tell you if they have anyone in network who performs the procedure you're looking to get. That would save you some time calling around trying to find a surgeon that takes your insurance.

I haven't had it done yet but I live in BC Canada and both my hormones and top surgery will be covered by BC MEDICAL, along with all the appointment and travel expenses.

this was also my experience. i live in ontario, canada and my top surgery was covered by OHIP. i had to go to montreal to get my surgery and they don't pay for travel expenses or hotels, so i had to pay out of pocket for that (maybe $500) but that isn't bad at all. because my surgery was covered by the province, only certain doctors would do it that way so i had really no "choice" in my surgeon. i saw her results though and they were really good so i honestly had no complaints. my results are also equally as awesome as the ones i've seen her do previously. she did a really good job with nipple placement which i find a lot of people worry about.

I got extremely lucky with top surgery; it was covered by my insurance so all I had to pay was a tiny copay, along with money for supplies, medication, post-surgical binder, etc. All in all, it came to less than 100$ I think.

But yes, depending on where you live and what your insurance is you might have trans related healthcare that's covered. You can contact and ask about your coverage and copay/deductible, and if they don't cover it outright you also still have the option to make your case and try to get it covered. Best of luck!

My DI+grafts surgery three days ago was covered by my Kaiser insurance plan, with a  $5 copay.  Best five bucks I've ever spent.  The follow-up appointment today was free, but I did spend about $60 on the optional but recommended compression vest I am supposed to wear for the next three or four weeks. 

Another friend who also had Kaiser but a different plan paid a $200 copay last year.

I paid out of pocket for the surgery with Dr. Garramone. I paid $7,300 for it. My insurance did cover my scripts that Dr. G gave me. I paid about $30-35 for them after my insurance covered the rest. One of the meds was $600 according the savings pamphlet I was given. But I know that if you pay out of pocket and use the Publix grocery store pharmacy behind Dr. Garramone's office they have it cheaper and always have it in stock. It's about $40 I think.

Costs so far

• $5 copay for initial consultation 9 months ago
• $5 copay for pre-op appointment around two weeks before surgery
• $0 for phone appointment with anaesthesiologist
• $15 copay for pain meds + antibiotics + scopolamine patch to put on the night before surgery
• $67 for compression vest to wear after surgery (57 plus tax plus shipping)
• $5 copay for surgery (thanks to the awesome benefits my spouse's union won for us)
• $0 copay for follow-up appointment 3 days later - initial reveal
• $5 copay for follow-up appointment 7 days later to remove drains and nipple sponges
• $20 for three-week supply of abdominal pad bandages after the initial supply the surgeon gave me runs out
• $12 for three-week supply of large band-aids to cover nipple grafts after the ones the surgeon gave me run out
• $5 for a tube of neosporin to use after the samples the surgeon gave me run out
• some optional supplements - coenzyme Q10, quercetin + bromelain, zinc, probably 15 bucks each for 2 months' worth

haven't yet bought more silicone sheeting but if I do another box of 5 pieces of 1.6"x12" sheets will cost $75 on eBay, or I might get a GelZone wrap instead - cheaper and reusable. 

if all goes well, will also have one more follow-up appointment at one month post-op and another one at six months, and there will be a $5 copay for each of those.

Mine isn't covered at all. At first I was worried about price and tried looking for a cheap doctor, then after seeing some results, having a few consults, and looking back on my own medical experiences, decided on steinwald in CO. He's about $10,000 for me not including travel and lodging. He was one of the most expensive options and i had to save for almost three years to afford it. I'm happy with my decision though. It something you'll have to live with forever, cost shouldn't be a factor.
