While I'll never question the ethics of the people behind this site I do have a few simple questions that may have been answered in the past and I may have missed.

While I don't run any websites the size of this, I do have my own business site and host a few of my friends sites as well, my hosting costs are $14.99USD a month.
I have had a total of 5 minutes down time in some 10 years.

So I have to question the costs of running this site.
I find it very hard to believe in this day and age, with storage so cheap, computers just as cheap and ISP's offering unlimited deals that running the server at home could cost $2000USD plus a month to run.

Have the owners thought about moving to hostgator, godaddy or like?
That would cut costs by 90% in a matter of minutes.

Sorry if I've upset anyone, but there has to be a way to cut costs

It has been discussed,  running the site is now Susan's full time job. I know that where I  live, you're hard pressed to live on $2,500 a month.

There is an additional consideration. The size of the site, bandwidth and to some degree security considerations would make commercial hosting more expensive than running a private site. I had one of those $15 sites for a while and it was great for what it was used for, there is no way Susan's would fit in the space that was provided.

This is a safe haven on the internet, no adds, no trolls, no flame wars. It has helped so many of us. Just by the very nature of of this sight I am sure there are those that would try to destroy it, just like they would like to do to us.

Here's the thread (from three years ago) where Susan finally asked for help. https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,145185.0.html Any assistance she can get is truly appreciated. As Dena stated, the traffic and the type of content we handle absolutely excludes a $9.99 Godaddy account for the site.

$2,000 a month. The goal this month was increased to allow the membership to help with a $2,850 shortfall over the last 5 months. Think about if you lost 1.5 monthly checks over 5 months. You would be in pretty dire financial straits as well.

Sorry if I upset you in asking Susan, I was just wondering how it was costing so much to run the site, I had no idea you were running it full time.
