Hello!
I'm trying to find some information out about Dr. Kuzon at University of Michigan's Gender Center. I've scoured the internet and only found 2 negative reviews. Both of these were a few years old, though. I'm wondering if anyone out there has anything to say about this doc.
Long story: My wife just recently got approved by our insurance to have her GRS covered. We were planning on going to Dr. Rumer (since her office said they'd work with insurance). However, that's not really the case. They require payment up front with reimbursement after. The hospital/anesthesia fees are covered by insurance, just not the surgeon's fees, which are approx. $14,000.
I had a length conversation with the insurance company about this. We have coverage under Ohio State University. Because its self-insured through OSU's hospital network, its difficult to get coverage out of state. But there are no GRS surgeons in state that do vaginoplasty (at least to our knowledge, and we have combed our options over several times). So they're willing to work with a surgeon to develop an in-network cost. The problem comes in negotiating a price for the insurance to pay. Surgeons charge less for out of pocket costs, because they get the money up front. But when insurance gets involved, they ask for more, knowing that ultimately the insurance will bargain for a lower price and possibly not pay it in whole. OSU is currently working with Rumer's office to try to negotiate that price, but I don't have high hopes.
However, in talking to them, they mentioned some kind of partnership with University of Michigan's clinic. This would be much closer for us. And, of course, if they're willing to take insurance, we'd only pay a max out of pocket cost of around $2,000. But we're both nervous about going to a surgeon with so little information available. I know that most people would suggest just going to the best, but money/insurance coverage limits that for her at the moment.
