"A transgender prostitute has been arrested in Sydney after allegedly infecting a man with HIV, police say.

The 38-year-old, who police said was a man but identified as a woman, was arrested at a Surry Hills hotel this week after allegedly infecting a client in Western Australia with the virus last year.

West Australian detectives will seek to extradite her to Perth when she appears in Central Local Court on Thursday on a grievous bodily harm charge.

But the woman's arrest in Sydney has now sparked an investigation by the NSW Sex Crimes Squad."

"Western Australia's Department of Corrective Services will not confirm whether a transgender sex worker accused of knowingly transmitting HIV and who identifies as a woman has been sent to a male or female prison, after her lawyer did not apply for bail in court."
