Hello, fellow trans people!

I was just browsing another forum where I read a post from someone claiming that a male bodied person who identifies as a man going through with various gender-themed surgeries (the person they were talking about was contemplating FFS and breast augmentation) is a form of appropriation. The OP seemed pretty angry at this perceived maltreatment of trans issues.

I don't post on any trans forums or have any trans friends, so I made an account here to try to get some input from other trans people. Do you think this is appropriation? My initial perspective is that a) people should be able to do what they want with their bodies, free of judgement. And b) more people undergoing these types of surgeries will result in better techniques, results, and more surgeons trained and willing to perform them. Am I missing something? Does the thought of a person doing this irk you or make you feel negative emotions? Please share your perspective .

Also if you've had any experiences with trans appropriation feel free to share them! I want to get a better idea of what appropriation is in general, and because I'm trans I think it might be a good lens to look through.

One thing that irks me is the words for trans people used in porn with trans actors. IDK why it has to be so... brutal. Really just nasty things that no one should ever call a trans person... I don't know if this is appropriation or what, but I don't like it.

EDIT: Changed some wording to make it clear that I'm talking about porn with trans people in it, and not porn for trans people. I don't think such a thing even exists.

Welcome to Susan's place. This is a really complex issue because transgender can be so many things. What drives us to this point is dysphoria - discomfort with our body or our life. We seek surgical corrections because that is part of the solutions align our body with our mind to eliminate the dysphoria. Some of what we do requires a therapist monitoring us to ensure we have considered all of the alternatives and this is the only solution that will allow us to live a more normal life. For us, it is more of a need than a want and we don't undertake it without a great deal of consideration.

Transgender can be many things with part time cross dresser on one end and transsexual on the other end. In between there are may ways this feeling can be expressed. A link to our Wiki will give you a better idea of some of the ways the transgender feeling can express it's self.

There have been other variations that have come to this site that are not in the link. The policy of this site is not to judge others  or how they chose to express themselves. You will find these rules in the TOS included in the copy of the links I am providing. Think about this and ask if you still fail to understand how we feel.

Why were they having these surgeries? Were they a drag queen? or genderfluid/ genderqueer? or both? 'cause these identities are as valid as trans ones, and saying that people who don't ID as binary trans shouldn't have them is like saying that trans women shouldn't have breast augmentations because they were designed for cis women.

It's also not true that there is a single 'transness' that can be appropriated. It's not a culture

I know many drag queen here in Bay area. Some do it as a performer others do it to begin first step of transition.
