Church Leader Suggests Catholics Spurn Girl Scouts, Find Alternatives

"The leader of the Catholic Church in St. Louis, Mo. is taking a strong stand against the Girl Scouts of America, reported the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, because of its support for transgender scouts and other LGBT issues.

Writing to his flock that parishes should find alternatives to the troops, Archbishop Robert Carlson stopped short of kicking the 4,000 scouts in the region off church property but he did announce he has disbanded a committee that served as a liaison between the organizations for the past century. The church really does not believe in evolution....  and yes they have lost touch of society in this day and age.

I can understand his point of view. I wouldn't want groups that I disagree with meeting on my property It's the church's right to use its space for whomever they decide.

But it's a hostile move, and inconsequential. The Girl Scouts will be fine with or without the Roman Catholic Church.

I really wish that people in this country would get the idea out of their heads that people who disagree on particular issues are by definition enemies.  In truth, the mission of the Girl Scouts is not all that far from the mission of the Church except in that dimension of implicit support for LGBT rights.  (from their website: Mission - Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.  Girl Scout Promise - On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, to help people at all times ...)

There are surely many, many members of the LGBT community that want to be part of the Catholic Church, and certainly many who already are.  It's not like the LGBT community wants to dismantle the church, and the Girl Scouts are not encouraging cis- or straight people to join the LGBT community, they're simply expressing support for them as human beings.  What's next, don't permit any groups to meet on church grounds if they have any history of supporting the Girl Scouts?  Excommunicate anyone found to have bought cookies?

It's especially peculiar at this moment in time, when this Pope himself has made statements and overtures, albeit not policy or dogma-related, suggesting at least some empathy for the suffering in the LGBT community.  My hope is that this will eventually "bubble up" to the point of Church leadership easing any restriction of support or participation in the Girl Scouts.

You could tell me that every single one of those cute little girls had a straight razor and wanted to slit my throat and I'd still buy the cookies!

At least this clears up the common misperception that the Catholic Church is in any way accepting of us.  At one time I had hopes that they might move in that direction but that hope is pretty well extinguished now.

I always buy my Girl Scout cookies on a busy street corner in downtown Evanston where I live so I don't have to worry about that. I don't think their crazy enough to use razor blades on a Saturday on a busy street corner.

Hmmm, since he doesn't want anything to do with the Girl Scouts he's really going to miss out on Thin Mints.  Maybe a few thousand LGBT people should buy a box and send them to him. >:-)
