My son has been recommended for northisterine to help curb periods. Anyone know anything about it as a drug?

If he is pre-T, it is probably a good option, though there are a lot of side effects that you should look at and be aware of. Hormone blockers would also help curb his period and may be a better fit depending on his age and how deep into puberty he is.

If he is on T or will be getting on T soon, ask about depo provera shots. They are used to stop periods and they don't mess with hormone levels.

My understanding blocker have to be started before puberty and can only be used so long because of all the side effects.

Well from what I'm told it is. Has feminising side effects so not good.  He doesn't want to look at it because of that which is understandable but where will that stand with the GIC.  They're coming over as gate keepers that like to say no.  The hormone blockers was what we expected but apparently he can't go on them for another four months.  They won't prescribe T because he's "only" 17 and the attitude seems to be that his being trans hasn't yet been confirmed!  Anyway long winded but this situation is getting ridiculous. This boy has known that these trans since age 13, came out to me at 14, came out at CAMHS in the same year. The process of referral to the GIC took over 8 months, he was on the waiting list for 5 months, had his first appointment at 16 and is now having to wait another 4 moths to go on hormone blockers to be on them   for at least a year before he gets on T. This is the worst part of being trans really.  I'll get off my high horse now. Sorry for ranting on!

The effects are less feminizing or addictive than estrogen in my experience and have the androgenic effects of creating more sebum which may result in spots (apparently like T can). They do curb periods big time, since you can vary the useage to find the right balance to either eliminate period pain altogether (at this point if I allow it to get to that stage the 'pain' is so minimal I can barely detect it), or eliminate the bleeding altogether once you get used to the way it works. Can't say I noticed much feminizing side effect at this point. Been on them myself for about 5 months. As a temporary alternative to the dreaded bleed they are good enough.
