There are many checks ...a few examples  ..first a therapist, then how you manage your friends and family with the news, how you react to HRT..etc. ..its up to you and your conviction that this is right for you.  It's a long journey with many setbacks but if it's right you may find peace in this lifetime. ..something few people ever find ......
When we first start our journey the perception and moral values all dramatically change in wonderment. As we evolve further it all becomes normal again but the journey has changed us forever.
