Transgender people can now change gender marker on Michigan ID without surgery

A small letter on Michigan driver's licenses — M or F — represents a barrier that is now easier for transgender people to clear.

The Secretary of State's change in policy this month allowing people to change the gender markers on their driver's license without first having surgery is a win for transgender people across Michigan, a supporter of the change says.

I apologize if this has already been posted. As a Michigan resident, this is big news.  I've had the marker on my passport changed for a while.  But Michigan had previously required a birth certificate change in order to change the marker on a state drivers license.  And the birth certificate change required an affidavit from a surgeon.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Although I haven't lived there for longer than I like to admit, this is good to hear. Now if they would just reduce the restrictions on changing your birth certificate!

April 22, 2015, the day of my first face to face pass in gender neutral clothes and no makeup. It may be months to the next one, but I'm good with that!

Being transgender is just a phase. It hardly ever starts before conception and always ends promptly at death.

They say the light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train. I say, climb aboard!
