"A 16-year-old lesbian claims she was thrown out of a McDonald's in Hull, England recently because she used the women's restroom, and didn't have ID to prove her gender to a manager who assumed she was a boy using the wrong restroom.

The Hull Daily Mail reports police were called to the McDonald's branch Tuesday as several patrons complained that Ny Richardson, her girlfriend, and several other friends were being disruptive and "abusive," and that Ny was using the women's restroom."

Reading the story, and between the lines of the company's official stance, the "disruption" was caused because she was rightly pissed the hell off for getting kicked out of the restroom she belonged in.  She's got a great case, and it might establish some wonderful precedent.

Technically, yes. But she will need possible hundreds of thousands to do it. Especially if MacDonald's decides to support its manager.

This story and it's popularity really shocked me. I know Ny briefly and know a lot of her friends personally.

While they aren't 'trouble makers' they aren't the sort of friends to back down to what happened at McDonalds, and in my opinion rightly so. However it does state in the report that there have been previous incidents, which I do believe.

I do find the story interesting though - a cis female is kicked out of a restroom and is experiencing transphobia.

Well, the bathroom laws are going to result in a new level of body policing for cis people too - none of them seem to realise this because they think that trans women are easily identifiable on sight

I admit I'm really curious about the one question (Were they really being disruptive or did McDonald's just use that as an excuse after the fact?) and you've helped answer that one, but I'd also been pondering the question of what McDonald's was thinking even if she *had* been disruptive offering the explanation that they just thought she looked a little too butch to use the ladies room.  I don't know that anybody can really help answer that one.

There's likely video of it, and since there's been mentioned of it then it probably supports her side of the story. I'm sure they would show it otherwise.

I'm very curious to see if McDonalds corporate makes any kind of statement on this.

This gender bathroom police thing is getting out of hand! It shows it's harmful for everyone, even cis people now! Wow, cis people experiencing transphobia sounds hilarious but in a tragic way. All this cruelty is clearly directed against us trans people but it can be harmful for cis people who might "look trans" too. Ugh. What does looking trans even mean? There's late stages of transition when trans people look completely cis, so....but seriously, we just want to use bathrooms without bothering anyone! It all just sounds horrible. Now we have this anti-trans hysteria everywhere. They just can't accept we're slowly getting our rights recognized! Bigots

Ha, I just read a similar story on Facebook about this happening state side. A cis-girl was thrown out of a restaurant in Detroit for looking to masculine. Is it bad for me to want this to happen more? It's like lawmakers don't understand anything unless it involves suing people or money.

Widespread, yes. Bigots are everywhere. Widely held, no. Only certain, very special people have fits about who is in what bathroom. Many cities in the US have bathroom ordnances that allow any person to use any bathroom. Most of the population of the US does not live in the states that have just passed anti-LGBT revenge laws. (This is blowback to SSM.)
