My husband is really into tattoos, and he has always tried to convince me to get some, but it was never something I considered. I wanted to have as little to do with my body as I could, if that makes sense, so the idea of getting a tattoo was just a non-starter.

Now that I'm transitioning, though, I'm starting to think that's something I could get into. As in, going big and getting some major work done. Then it occurred to me that maybe the right tattoos could help with some of the aspects of my body I have dysphoria about. Like, sleeves over my biceps could help make my muscles look less defined.

I was wondering if anybody had some advice on this. What about shoulders, for instance? What kind of tattooing could de-emphasize shoulder width? Or make hips look wider?

I'm really into tattoos (yet to get any though :/ ) and this is a side of tattooing I haven't considered. I suspect if you tattooed your shoulders or biceps it'll make them look more muscular; similar to how you'd look with a baseball shirt on with rolled up sleeves. I think an elegant flower tattoo covering your hip would look really great that flows with your body. Something like this:

Hi,

When considering a tattoo it's a very good idea to look at common designs that cisgender females commonly place on their body. Shoulder tattoos are very common place while sleeve tattoos are far less common as one needs to consider how they will present themselves in life overall e.g. at work, at a formal event etc. The only time I can't cover my tattoos is when wearing a tank top as one of my tattoos goes down to where a regular shirt will hide it but not with a tank top, same goes for my tattoo on the back of my shoulder. Thinking of this ahead of time I made sure these tattoos were in good taste while not thinking of this in advance could very well be detrimental to how I am seen my others. We all entertain the idea of "I don't care what others think about my tat, it's only important to me". But when you are transitioning you are more scrutinized then your cisgender counterpart and need to not stick out if the person getting this tattoo is not fully passable as this will first call attention to the tattoo then to you the person.

So I would take time to learn if having a specific tattoo would be an issue down the road or not then proceed from there.
