I think you hit the nail on the head.  Sometimes, when dealing with dinosaurs, the best you can do is to pray that the comet gets here soon.

As long as it doesn't take the rest of us out in the process...

Granted I am getting older myself, but I don't think the bigotry is correlated with age.  There are lots and lots of transphobic younger people (and lots of allies of transgender people who are older).  I wish it were so simple, but I don't think that bigotry just dies out, whether is is transphobia, racism, antisemitism, or you name it.

I never meant to imply that bigotry is strictly correlated with age, nor did I intend to malign peoples of advanced age in general. I apologize for having done so and for any offense I've caused.

If I may offer an explanation as to what I DID mean, it is my experience that the older you are the greater the tendency to become more set in your ways and resistant to change. Young people are also perfectly capable of making up their minds and refusing to be swayed on an issue. But if you've made an effort to continue learning and evolving, if you reassess long held beliefs in the light of new evidence, then you probably will not stagnate intellectually.

I do not believe this sheriff does any of these things. I believe his world view was established during childhood, in church, and has changed very little since its initial formation. In such a case, with each passing year the odds decrease that he will suddenly become an enlightened individual that has compassion and empathy beyond his own nose.

That's all wild speculation though. I might be completely wrong and he may be a giant teddy bear up close who is perfectly willing to educate himself or be educated on issues of which he's ignorant. Such as when he conflated gay and trans, or the way he seemingly considers trans-women to be men, or the socially tone-deaf joke about the closet not having a door in 20 years, all the while using threats of violence to encourage trans people to stay in the closet.

Or maybe we're completely misreading what he meant? Maybe he meant that the only thing he would have a problem with is if someone who considers themselves to be a man entered the women's restroom, and he's actually a trans supporter who thinks people should use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identities.

Severe mental illness.

In defense of the mentally ill, that doesn't necessitate being an awful person. Some of the sweetest people I know are mentally ill. I know I do my best to, at the very least, not make the world a worse place to live in, though I may be failing miserably at that.

Either way, here's some more pretty music :)
'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

So, he's gone on record admitting he'd break the law and commit assault. As an officer of the law, next time he's in court accused of doing just that how is he credibly going to deny it?

And how many people has he already assaulted and the court took his word over theirs? Time for some retrials perhaps.

And how is he managing to keep his job? There's probably a lot of people in power supporting him and his views.

Cops are very very rarely convicted, even with overwhelming evidence stacked against them.

I'd hope that's a separate issue, though I don't suppose it is. He shouldn't be able to provide evidence to convict anyone from this point on.

Mr. Tysilio: If you want for all of us & the world start a new thread & post this man's email address so all the members can see. There are members all over the world that would like to express their opinion I'm sure, most would be a lot nicer than me. Thanks for your post & take care. All any of us want to do is have a safe place to take a pee you know. We never bother other people.... Thanks again.

Sorry, FrancisAnn, but I'm not going to post it on a public site. I wouldn't feel right about that.

We're no different -- I too just want a safe place to pee, and I have no prospect of getting my birth certificate changed any time soon. The legislature in my state is also considering one of these bills, although our governor has promised to veto it.

"Devlyn, it means what you want it to mean..."  said Tysilio meanly.

Not much to 'splain, really -- I was reading about coyote/dog fights the other day (I'm hoping to adopt a dog, and he just got into one, so I'm waiting for him to heal), and someone was talking about trying to break one up while armed only with an umbrella. This just sort of popped into my head, and I decided I liked it.

What can I say, I have a taste for strange humor:

Q: How many Dadaists does it take to change a light bulb?
A: To get to the other side.
Never bring an umbrella to a coyote fight.

The sheriff is just another product of a transphobic culture.  He's just embraced the transphobia to a more unhealthy degree.  One has to wonder what he is compensating for, to appoint himself as Guardian Of The Restroom...
